NIGHTCAPS NOTES

GOLF CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) Under favourable weather conditions the local Golf Club held its closing day on Wednesday, December 14, a large number of players taking part in the various competitions, which consisted of approaching, putting and approaching and holing out over nine holes. At the conclusion of the interesting and enjoyable afternoon’s play Mr J ; Johnstone presided at the presentation of trophies won during the year. He thanked members for their loyal cooperation throughout the season which had beeen one of the most successful on record, and trusted that next season the club would experience a still greater measure of success. He then called on Mrs Barr, ladies’ captain, to present the trophies won by the ladies during the past term, after which Mr Johnstone presented the prizes won by the men during the same period. Mr J. Barr responded on behalf of the prize-winners. The afternoon’s contests resulted as follows: — Ladies’ putting, Mrs Johnstone. Approaching, Mrs Barr. The annual public school concert on Thursday evening drew a large attendance of the public, the Town Hall being packed to the doors. A capital programme was presented and encores were in frequent demand. In the unavoidable absence of Mr W. Excell (chairman of the School Committee), Mr D. Sinclair presented the dux medal to Nelville Grant and the girls’ progress prize of three bound volumes to Melrose Sheddan. W. Fordyce, who had gained a place in the Southland primary schools’ Rugby fifteen, was presented with his rep. cap by Mr H. Gazzard (headmaster). The items, which were announced by Master W. Robertson, were as follows:—National Anthem; School Song —senior pupils; recitation —C. Adcock; chorus—infants; recitation—Bessie Prior; chorus—infants; drill display—girls; chorus—juniors; song—G. Griffiths; recitation—B. Brumby; action song—senior boys; character song—senior girls; children’s chorus; dialogue—senior girls; duet—Jessie Robertson and M. Dockerty; chorus—junior girls; club swinging—boys; song—tiny tots; recitation—B. Brumby; song and ballet—l. Griffiths, R. Duncan, L. Lowe . and I. Irwin; chorus—junior girls; Chinaman song—boys; song, L. Lowe and G. Griffiths, assisted by chorus; recitation—W. Robertson; final chorus, “Good Old New Zealand”—pupils. Miss Kelly, relieving assistant at the Nightcaps School for the past term, who was untiring in assisting to train the children for the numerous displays, was presented during the evening with a handsome bouquet and monster box of chocolates. Break-up. The school break-up was held on Friday, a large number of parents attending. Sports for the children were held in the schoolgrounds during the afternoon. The Revs. Campbell and Ashworth delivered short addresses and complimented the staff on the successful results achieved for the past year. On behalf of the school committees and staff, Mr P. Grant made a presentation of an amber necklace to Miss Latimer, who has received an appointment at Kaitangata School. He also paid a tribute to Miss Latimer’s zeal and ability while at the local school, and. wished her every success for the future. Mr IL Gazzard responded. Cricket. Nightcaps and Wairio cricket teams tried conclusions on the Wairio grounds in ideal weather on Saturday afternoon. Nightcaps were stronger all round and maintained their unbeaten record by defeating Wairio rather easily. R. Burgess gave a solid batting display and was chief scorer for the winning side with 55 runs. He is now well in the running for the club’s aggregate cup. D. Baird, who took 12 wickets for 57 runs, kept a splendid length throughout and always had the Wairio batsmen in difficulties. R. Mr and Mrs T. Thomson returned from Dunedin a few days ago. Messrs H. Gazzard, P. Grant, R. Cochrane and W. E. Excell have returned from their camping trip. Miss M. Carmody, of the Girls’ High School, Gore, is home on vacation. Mr R. Crawford left on Wednesday for Clyde. Mr and Mrs W. Excell left by motor on Tuesday for Kaka Point, where they will spend the holidays. Messrs J. Cosgriff, E. Excell and N. Grant returned a few days ago from a successful fishing and shooting expedition in the Waiau district. Miss Wright left for her home at Morton Mains on Saturday. A number of local tennis enthusiasts motored to Browns on Wednesday for the combined doubles tournament. P. Welsh and his partner were successful in v/inning this event. Miss M. Kelly left on Monday for her home in Gore. Women’s Institute. The December meeting of the Nightcaps branch was held on the 19th in the form of a children’s evening. A Christmas tree was provided and decorated by the ladies, each child receiving a gift off it. The evening passed pleasantly with games, competitions and musical items. Miss A. Irwin won the prize for the best humorous story and Mrs Magee for the evening competition. The winners of the children’s games were Mirrum Dockerty, Billy Rushton, Iris Irwin, Jack Grant and Dempsey Magee. The main feature of the evening, from the children’s point of view, was the arrival of Santa Claus who presented the gifts from the tree. It was decided to have demonstrations on knitting and wool work at the next meeting, the roll-call to be “favourite recipes.” Two new members were enrolled and two more nominated for next month. After a comprehensive vote of thanks to all those who had assisted in making the evening a success, the president wished every one the compliments of the season and the evening was brought to a close with the institute anthem. The hostesses for the evening were: Mesdames Lobb, Magee, Pointon and Misses Barr and Spence.
