RETURNED SOLDIERS
' THE GORE ASSOCIATION. EXECUTIVE MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers Association was held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening. Mr E. J. Columb (president) occupied the chair, and the following members were present: Messrs J. McDonald, L. Roberts, A. C Steel. F. M. Murray, J. Robertson, P. R. Stewart, W. ”D. Shelton, C. M. Wilson, R. B. Bannerman and G. L. Gerken (secretary). Before the commencement or tne business the president moved a vote of condolence and sympathy with the widow and relatives of the late Mr Frank Foulston. This was carried m the customary manner by the members standing in silence' for a few moments, and as a further mark of respect the meeting was adjourned for 15 minutes. A vote of condolence with Mr Waiter Wright, Riversdale, who recently lost his daughter, was also passed, and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Wright conveying to him the sympathy of the association. The hospital visiting sub-committee reported on its visits to the local hospital during the past fortnight. One ex-soldier was undergoing treatment on both occasions, and he was making good progress towards recovery. Two new committees were appointed for the term extending over the holidays— Messrs Steel and Aitken for the . first fortnight, and Messrs Stewart and McDowell for the second fortnight. One new member was elected to the association. The secretary reported that the financial membership now stood at 278, as compared with 269 last meeting night and 253 at the corresponding period last year. The secretary reported that a very good response, both in cash and goods, had been received to the Christmas cheer appeal. The sub-committee had all arrangements well in hand and the distribution would be made on Friday afternoon. The Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, War Graves Division, wrote acknowledging receipt of a letter from the Gore R.S.A. regarding the grave of the late R. J. Savage, ex-Northumberland Fusiliers. The writer stated that this was the first intimation he had received of this death, but the case would now be taken up and advice in regard to the grave would be forwarded later. The Town Clerk, Mataura, wrote stating that his council has decided to accede to the request regarding street sales of poppies. The general secretary, Wellington, wrote regarding the territorial boundaries between the Gore and Dunedin Associations, and asked if headquarters might help in the matter by taking it up with the Dominion Association. The question was left in the hands of the sub-committee which had previously conferred with the sub-committee from the Dunedin Association on the matter. To fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late, Mr Foulston, Mr L. Roberts was elected vice-president for the remainder of the year. Mr S. Paterson, East Chatton, was elected to fill the vacancy on the executive. The next meeting was fixed for Tuesday, January 24, and the president (Mr Columb), the senior vice-pre-sident (Mr L. Roberts) and Mr Shelton were appointed a sub-committee to handle any urgent business that may arise in the interval. Before the meeting terminated the president expressed his thanks to the members for the assistance they had accorded him since he had taken office, and wished one: and all a merry Christmas.
