COUNCIL MATTERS.
To the Editor. Sir, —It seems to me and I feel sure to others also, that the vegetable growing business as stated in to-day’s Times was a failure. I never expected it to be anything else when inaugurated, as anyone taking a walk around the streets and where workers live could see the sections full of grass and weeds and scarcely any vegetables grown. The fact that only three workers out of 22 were successful speaks for itself. As the Mayor states it was rather expensive for the city. Councillor Denham’s remarks to my mind are not sensible ones. Why did not the 19 men tackle the job like the three men? If I wanted a man to work for me I would hunt up one of the three, not one of the 19. Again I agree with the council’s action in turning down the shelter tents business. It seems to me that Councillor Denham is always trying to dig into the council’s rate money. I often wonder whether he is a ratepayer or not by the way he suggests that the council should pay transport and tents. He may next ask that the council supply umbrellas etc. Others and myself years ago had to walk farther than Duck Creek to work and no buses or tents were supplied by our employers, at 6/6 and 7/- a week. Councillors Gilkison and Ball show more interest and sense in their remarks in the city’s interest and I hope ratepayers will take notice of those who are looking after the city’s interests. —I am, etc., WORKER AND RATEPAYER.
