OTAUTAU NOTES

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Unemployment Committee the secretary was instructed to write to the Central Committee requesting permission to proceed with the top-dressing of the school ground which had been held up owing to unfavourable weather conditions. It was decided that as soon as men were available the continuation of work on Kane's creek was to be completed. The certifying officer reported that sawmilling and seasonable occupations had absorbed a considerable number of men, the registrations being lower than for some time. This being Mr Rowan’s last meeting prior to his removal to Petone the chairman and members expressed warm appreciation of the splendid public work Mr Rowan had done in the capacity of certifying officer and also as a member of the committee, his grasp of all aspects of the subject being of the greatest assistance in the administration of unemployed matters in this district. • Scottish Society. At a meeting of the Otautau branch of St. Andrew’s Scottish Society, Chief D. McCrostie presided, and reported that a successful member’s evening had been held, at which Mr John Fisher had given a lecture on Sir H. Lauder’s book, "Roamin’ in the Gloaming.” The Hallowe’en social had also been a success and the members were indebted to the performers and to Mrs McLeod for providing the haggis. Mr M. Coulter was also thanked for making boxes to hold and carry the new supply of crockery. The Wyndham Society forwarded a syllabus, showing that Otautau branch was to provide a programme at Wyndham on March 17, 1933. The question of the Pipe Band playing at the athletic sports at Limehills was referred to the pipe-major. It was decided to hold the annual social and dance on Friday, December 30, in view of the fact that New Year’s Eve fell on Saturday. It was resolved to hold the annual meeting on Wednesday, December 7. General. Arrangements have been made to hold the annual Otautau and district school picnic at Colac on Wednesday, February 1, 1933. At the meeting of farmers in the Town Hall on Friday evening, when Messrs D. Jones (chairman) and J.

Beggs (member) of the New Zealand Meat Board gave addresses, the following resolution was unanimously carried: “That this meeting of over 100 farmers at Otautau of primary producers, respectfully urges upqn the Government the necessity of lifting the rate of exchange between New Zealand and London as a means of relieving the economic position of the Dominion.” A copy of this resolution is to be sent to the Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. A. Hamilton. Personal. Mr and Mrs H. D. Irving are spending a holiday in the Lakes District. Mr J. Matheson was visiting his people during the week-end. Mr and Mrs T. Cunningham and Miss M. Hardy spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs J. Hardy, Liemen street.
