TUATAPERE NOTES
(From Our Correspondent.) That the gardens in the Western District are quite as forward as some in the north was evidenced this week when a local resident dug some splendid samples of early potatoes which proved to be good eating. The potatoes varied in size from as large as the palm of the hand to the size of a hen’s egg, and were grown by Mr H. Lobb. The variety was Sutton’s Perfection. Strawberries are also well formed and samples of ripe berries from _ Mrs S. Laurie’s plants are large and juicy. Prior to leaving Tuatapere Mr E. Silverwood was met by the members of the local Post Office staff and presented with a Loewe pipe as a token of the esteem in which he was held by his fellow officers. In making the presentation Mr D. O’Leary spoke highly of Mr Silverwood as a friend, and stated that the promotion to postmaster at Otautau was proof of his efficiency and reliability as an officer of the department. He also thanked Mr Silverwood for his interest in the staff as individuals and for his assistance and encouragement to them to study and rise in the service. In'returning thanks fc«r the gift and good wishes, Mr Silverwood said the relations between postmaster and other members of the staff had been happy and he had pleasant memories of his six years in Tuatapere. In saying goodbye he would advise each of them to study and so fit himself for a higher position so that promotion would follow. He expressed the hope that under Mr Hardie they would work as harmoniously and efficiently as had been the case in the past.
