Mr and Mrs J. A. S. Aitken, Gore, left by car for Christchurch yesterday. Mr G. W. Braxton has been appointed manager of the local branch of Electrolux Ltd. Mr Edgar Hazlett returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr Eric Russell has been appointed chairman of the Southland Mortgagors’ Adjustment Commission in place of Mr D. Rutledge, who resigned. Mr D. F. Reid, of Wellington, was in Invercargill yesterday for a few hours after visiting relatives in the Queenstown district. Mr Reid leaves New Zealand in three weeks’ time for England, where he will take over the management of the London office of the Bank of New Zealand. The Rev. J. Carlisle, Dominion Evangelist to the New Zealand Baptist Union, has tendered his resignation as minister of the Esk street Baptist Church. Mr Carlisle, whose resignation was accepted with deep regret by the church, will conduct his final services next Sunday. He and Mrs Carlisle will be accorded a public farewell on Monday. Eastern District residents will regret to learn of the death of Mr Charles Cooper which occurred yesterday in Dunedin. The late Mr Cooper, who was in his 77th year, was for many years a highly esteemed resident of Gore. He was a life member and a keen supporter of the Gore A. and P. Association and was a regular contributor to its prize fund. Reference was made at the meeting of directors of the Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday by the president (Mr W. R. Ronald) to the deaths of several valuable members which had occurred since the previous meeting. Mrs S. Beavan, one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the show and whose husband had been a past president, had passed on, as also had Mr Robert Gibb, a very enthusiastic supporter of the association’s shows. Family bereavements had also been suffered by the Hon. A. F. Hawke and Mr T. E. Paterson, both directors of the association. Mr James Meehan, whose death at Timaru at the age of 71 years is announced, had been associated with the town and district over a long period of years. Born at Sandhurst, Victoria, in 1861, Mr Meehan spent his early days in the goldfields of that State. At the age of five he came to New Zealand with his parents, and landed at Moeraki in 1866. The family journeyed from; the coast to the goldfields at Naseby and Macraes by bullock waggon, and there Mr Meehan resided until early youth. He joined the staff of the Mount Ida Chronicle, one of the earliest papers in Otago, and after spending some time in its service he moved to Timaru, whefe he commenced a general store-keep-ing business. He later established a similar business at St. Andrews apd Makikihi, where he settled in 1883. The late Mr Meehan returned to Timaru in 1913 and opened a grain, seed and produce merchant’s business, being the head of this firm until his death. He is survived by his wife and three daughters and four sons.
