Mrs J. B. Reid, Louisa street, was hostess at afternoon tea at her home on Wednesday. Mrs John McCrostie was hostess at afternoon tea at her home in Rodney street, on Tuesday. Mrs A. L. Broughton entertained a few friends in her new home in Louisa street on Monday afternoon. Mrs E. Flynn returns to Wairaki today after a fortnight’s holiday spent with her sister-in-law, Mrs J. Drake, Ocean Beach.

Mr and Mrs A. G. Seddon, Simprin street, leave for Christchurch this morning for Carnival Week. Mrs R. N. Todd, Dee street, Avenal, returned on Thursday evening after a week’s visit to Christchurch. Mrs William Bond and Miss Mary Bond have returned to Dunrobin after some weeks spent at Rotorua. Miss Nancy Nicholson, Herbert street, left by yesterday afternoon’s express to spend the week-end in Dunedin. Mrs Roger Bakewell, of Petone, is at present visiting Southland and is staying with her mother, MrsW. Guthrie, at Tuatapere. Mrs J. N. Armour, Avenal road, entertained Miss Mackintosh of Columba College at morning tea at her home on Wednesday. Miss Kathleen Fountain, the guest of Mrs A. C. Mac Ewan, and Miss Guida Brent, who is staying with Miss Guthrie, return to Dunedin next Wednesday. Mrs A. V. Kirkby leaves by tomorrow evening’s express for Wellington where she will spend a few weeks before returning to her home in New Plymouth. Mrs W. R. Harris was hostess at bridge on Thursday evening, when her guests included: Dr and Mrs A. OwenJohnston, Mr and Mrs F. C. Rowley, Mrs H. S. Mitchel, and Mrs J. H. Waymouth.

Mrs F. J. Loughnan, Gala street, leaves this morning by motor for Fairlie to attend the wedding of her niece, Miss Meg Loughnan, to Mr Pat Jennings, a brother of Dr. David Jennings of this city. Mrs W. McGruer and Miss Loma McGruer, of Auckland, after spending a week with Mrs McGruer’s niece, Mrs J. N. Armour, Avenal road, left by Monday express for Dunedin, on' the first stage of their journey home.

Mr and Mrs H. W. Kirkby, who went from Queenstown to Dipton yesterday to spend the night with Mr and Mrs W. L. Cunningham, at Castle Downs, come into town to-day and will spend a few days with Mr and Mrs R. A. Anderson, at Victoria Park.

Mr and Mrs D. F. Reid, of Wellington, who have been visiting relatives in Southland, stayed at the Grand Hotel on Thursday evening and left for the north yesterday. Mr Reid, for some years manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Wellington, leaves for England shortly with Mrs Reid to take up his new duties as the London manager.

Saturday’s brilliant sunshine made the beautiful grounds at Mrs W. Macalister’s home, Dee street, Avenal, an ideal place for the garden party given there in honour of Miss Mackintosh (Lady Principal of Columba College) and Mrs R. A. Ewing, who came down from Dunedin to meet the members of the newly formed Southland branch of the Columba College Old Girls’ Association. Mrs Alan Macalister (president) acted as hostess. Bouquets of freesias, tulips and azaleas, intermingled with ribbons in the school colours, blue and gold, were presented to the guests of honour, and to Mrs Alan Macalister. Miss Mackintosh and Mrs Ewing both addressed the gathering and congratulated Southland on having formed an association of its own. In the evening the members attended the presentation of plays by the Workshop Theatre, and on Sunday there was a church parade at First Church. Among those present at the garden party were:—Mesdames R. A. Ewing, W. Macalister, Alan Macalister, D. G. Strang, Harvey, Bews, Musselwhite; Misses Mackintosh, K. D. On Thursday afternoon the members of the Garden Circle of the Women’s Club visited the public gardens. In the unavoidable absence of Mr J. A. McPherson, Mr Stapleton conducted the party through the gardens, and his instruction and information were interesting, as well as helpful. At the conclusion of the afternoon, tea was served in the Women’s Rest Rooms. Among those present were: Mesdames F. D. Morrah, G. I. Moffett, J. G. Macdonald, Ritchie Crawford, Roy Anderson, W. S. Many visitors were present at Wanaka for the Labour Day week-end including a number of motor-cyclists from the Otago Motor Club who were taking part in a reliability trial. Miss Marjory Ott leaves on Monday to spend a week in Dunedin. Mr and Mrs J. Kent, Victoria street, are spending a holiday in Timaru. Mrs G. I. Moffett, North road, was hostess at afternoon tea yesterday. Mrs E. K. Smythies left on Monday for a week’s holiday in Roxburgh. Mrs W. J. A. McGregor, of Mt. Linton, leaves for Dunedin on Monday for a few days. Mr and Mrs W. E. Hazlett returned to Burwood on Wednesday after a few days in town. Mrs I. D. Jack, Dalrymple road, was hostess at bridge on Monday and Thursday evenings. Mrs Cole, Lowe street, is holidaying in Dunedin and is the guest of Mrs Stewart, Abbotsford, Dunedin. Miss Jenny Rodger, Alice street, left yesterday to spend the week-end with Miss Fay McHutcheson, Gore. Miss Jessie Cunningham, Duke street, has returned home after spending the winter and spring in Auckland. Mrs A. H. Mackrell, Duke street, entertained Miss Mackintosh, of Columba College, at morning tea on Tuesday. Guests at the Club Hotel during the week include: Mr and Mrs A. O. Norwood (London); and Mr and Mrs L. F. Sartin (Wellington). Mrs B. W. Hewat, Russell street, returned on Wednesday from Waikaia, where she was the guest of Mr and Mrs R. G. Charters at Glenlapa station. Mrs Graeme Anderson, of Christchurch, who has been the guest of Dr. and Mrs C. C. Anderson, Don street, for the past month, returns north today. Miss Margery Todd, Thomson street, gave a “bathroom afternoon” in the form of a tennis party yesterday afternoon at the Invercargill Tennis Courts in honour of Miss Marjory Ott. Mrs R. A. Anderson, Invercargill, Mrs Kirkby, New Plymouth, and Mrs G. Anderson, Invercargill, were the guests of Mrs Hugh Anderson, “Brookdale,” Hokonui, during the week. Mrs R. Ewing, who was the guest of Mrs D. G. Strang, Wellington street, for the Columba College Old Girls’ Association functions, returned to Dunedin on Sunday. Miss Mackintosh returned on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs P. C. Mills, Herbert street, returns by this evening’s express from a three weeks’ holiday in Auckland. She is accompanied by her sister, Mrs W. L. Casey, and Miss Valerie Casey, of Auckland, who will be her guests. Mrs R. McLeod, who has been on an extended visit to her mother, Mrs J. E. Bews, Dalrymple road, leaves _on her return to Geraldine this morning. Her sister, Mrs H. B. Famall, Conon street, is accompanying her. Mr and Mrs D. H. Thomson, Gala street, have returned from an extended holiday tour which took them as far as Auckland. Mrs Thomson stayed a week in Dunedin on her way south, and returned to Invercargill last Friday. Mrs J. G. Macdonald, Provincial Commissioner of Girl Guides for Southland, leaves next Thursday on her way to Auckland to attend the Commissioners’ Conference to be held there. Next week-end she will be the guest of her sister, Mrs A. D. Bell, at Shag Valley station, Prior to her departure from Georgetown to another part of the city, Mrs R. Grace was given an “At Home” at the residence of Mrs S. Muir, Venus street, and presented with a bronze vase from her friends, who wished her well in the coming days. Competitions and a dainty afternoon tea passed _ a pleasant afternoon. Those present included Mesdames Grace, Muir, Jordan, Breen, Taggart, Mitchell, McNaughton, Misses Breen (2) and McCallum. Mrs Ralph Abercrombie, Riverton, was hostess at a delightful bridge party last week to farewell Miss Rowlands, who left on Tuesday for Wellington. Those present beside the host and hostess were:—Mr and Mrs G. R. Berndtson, Dr. and Mrs C. H. Gordon, Mr and Mrs A. D. Angus, Mr and Mrs Caigou, the Rev. J. N. and Mrs Thompson, Mesdames P. B. Campbell was hostess at a kitchen evening at her home in Morton road on Tuesday in honour of Miss Dorothy Gazzard. _ A most enjoyable evening was spent in music, games and competitions. Mr Campbell, on behalf of those present, presented the guest with a number of useful gifts, wishing her every happiness in the future. Mr Hain replied on behalf of Miss Gazzard.
