Mr Edgar C. Hazlett, of Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by last nights express. > Messrs P. A. Smith and J. Rosenberg, both of Auckland, were passengers by the express from the north last night. Mr A. F. Parfitt, supervisor of the clerical branch of the local Post Office, who has been on a business visit to Wellington, returned by the express last evening. A Press Association message from Minneapolis states that M. Henri Verbrugghen, whose connection with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra was severed in 1931 due to illness, has been engaged as chairman of the Department of Music at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, and is joining the faculty next September. He will sail shortly for Belgium pending the assumption of Iris new duties. Mr and Mrs R. K. Sihthorpe (Invercargill) have been visiting friends in Tunbridge Wells and St. Leonards, reports the London correspondent of the Christchurch Press, writing on September 30. They have done a considerable amount of motoring in Sussex, Kent, Cornwall, and Devonshire. As Mr Sibthorpe’s interests are connected with the stage, the business for which he has come over, the length of his stay here is indefinite. The Rev. John Paterson completes 25 years this week in the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. His first charge was Broken Hill, N.S.W., where he served four years; his second was Chalmers Church, Sydney, where he remained for three years, until his call to St. Paul’s Church, Christchurch, where he remained for ten years, until his transfer to his present position in Wanganui, which he has occupied for the past eight years. Mr Paterson has always taken a keen and active interest in Savagery, and is a past Great Chief of the Christchurch Savage Club. Mr A. S. Burgess, of Wanganui, the newly-elected president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, was bom in Wanganui in 1869, and educated in Wellington and Wanganui. He was employed with A. Hatrick and Co.. Ltd., in Wanganui until 1928, when he started in business on his own account, founding A. S. Burgess and Co., Ltd., shipping and insurance agents. Mr Burgess has been president of the Wanganui Chamber j>f Commerce for the last two years, and a member of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce since 1930. He has served on the Wanganui City Council, and is a member of the Wanganui Harbour Board, besides being’president of both the Western Federated Aero Clubs and Wanganui Aero Club. ,
