LOCAL BODIES

PROPOSED AMALGAMATION. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter). Wellington, November 1. Some interesting comment on the National Expenditure Commission’s recommendation for the amalgamation of local bodies in New Zealand was made by Mr A. E. Jull (C., Waipawa) who is also Chairman of the Counties Association, in speaking in the financial debate in the House this evening. Mr Jull said that he was not against amalgamation. He would say straight out it could be done. He could name off hand a dozen counties that could be amalgamated, but the amount that would be saved by the amalgamation would be trifling compared with what people were led to believe. The commission in effect said if local bodies were reduced by half, the expenditure would be reduced by half, but it would be nothing of the sort. There had already been a degree of amalgamation in New Zealand, for some years ago there were 320 road boards in New Zealand, but to-day there were 18 only. He was just mentioning the facts with a view to pointing out that people making wild statements tended to mislead the public. He was not saying there should not be amalgamation. There was a large number of local authorities operating in an area. Another authority and these could quite well be amalgamated with larger authority.
