The economic value of several varieties of shellfish found in New" Zealand was mentioned by Mr A. W. B. Powell, conchologist and palaeootologist to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, in the course of an address recently. He said that in 1930 there were 5215 sacks of rock oysters gathered from the northern beds, the value being £6258, while in the same period 42,744 sacks of Stewart Island oysters, valued at £26,715, were collected. There were 9037 sacks of Auckland mussels marketed in 1930, the price realized being £2833, while 6532 cases of toheroas were packed in 1929, representing a value of £12,442.
