SOUTH INVERCARGILL

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. TRANSFER OF MEN TO DUCK CREEK. The monthly meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council was held last evening, his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. McChesney) presiding over the following: Councillors C. M. Dickson, G. H. Smith, O. H. Paton, T. W. Richards, A. V. Hope and E. J. McNeil. The inspector of nuisances (Mr G. Nicol) reported that a small number of wandering stock required to be dealt with during the month. A complaint made by a ratepayer concerning the destruction of his hedges by stock being driven to the paddock had been investigated and the owners of stock notified. In his monthly report the foreman (Mr J. A. McMillan) stated that surfacing had been carried out along Moulson, Stirratt, Scott and McQuarrie streets, also Boxal and Bluff roads. Ditch cleaning had been undertaken in Maher, McQuarrie, Dipton, McMillan and Richards streets, also Boundary and Tramway roads. Six chains of ditch were dug in Stirratt street as requested opposite Mr Stuck’s property. The unemployment relief men had been working on Kelly, Bain, Peace, Avon and Oreti streets. This task completed, they were at present working on Stirratt street which work they had to leave a few months ago on account of rain. Advice was received from the Medical Officer of Health that the. department had been authorized to make a reduction of 10 per cent, in the contributions made by local authorities towards the salaries and expenses of departmental health inspectors, such reduction to date from April 1 last. A letter was received from the secre-

tary of the Clifton Tennis Club drawing the attention of the council to the condition of Severn street leading to the tennis courts. The foreman was instructed to attend to the matter. The secretary of the Southland Unemployment Executive Committee (Mr P. C. Weenink) advised that the threeday men in the employment of the council were to be transferred to employment with the Public Works Department at Duck Creek from November 7. The Mayor said that during the month the four-day men had been transferred to Duck Creek and now that the three-day men were to be similarly dealt with, only six men would be left. It would be necessary to hold a special meeting of the council to deal with the question. The Mayor said that in the meantime he would make inquiries in order to have something definite to put before the council.
