WYNDHAM NEWS

SCOTTISH SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent). The monthly meeting of Wyndham and District St. Andrews Scottish Society was held in the Masonic Hall, on Friday evening, when there was _ a large attendance of clansfolk. Chief John Halliday, presided, and supporting him were Chieftains James Henderson, William Frame, and Douglas Macpherson, all of whom, accompanied by Mr Malcolm, the lecturer of the evening, were played on to the platform by pipers William Cochrane and John McDonald. Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by community singing. Thereafter the Chief briefly introduced Mr Malcolm of the Government Tourist Department, who entertained them with an address and moving pictures dealing with the scenic beauties of New Zealand. During the evening much appreciated vocal items were contributed by Mesdames Stirling and T. Skinner; and Messrs D. N. A. Macpherson and Stewart. Miss L. Crochrane and. E. G. Macpherson acted as accompanists. On the call of Chieftain Henderson, a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker and performers for their very fine contributions. Supper, followed by a short dance, concluded a bright evening’s entertainment.

Wyndham Band of Hope. The monthly meeting of the Wyndham Band of Hope was held in the Sunday School Hall, last Wednesday evening, when there was a very large attendance of members. Rev. G. D. Falconer presided, and, after the usual opening ceremonies, the following programme was submitted:—Vocal duets, June Stewart and Connie Irland; Myrtle Crosbie and Bertha Stevenson, Song Mr W. Lennon; recitations, Telfer Robertson and George Leith; elocutionary item, Hendy Hunter, Ted Pankhurst, Flora Livingstone, Tui Harper, Adam Hunter, Jack Black. The main address for the occasion was delivered by Mr W. Lennon (Edendale); the evening concluded with the pronouncing of the Benediction. Edendale W.D.F.U. The above branch met on Tuesday afternoon, when Mrs A. Townley presided over 14 members. It was decided to hold a street stall, probably on Saturday, November 19, to raise funds for the housekeepers’ fund. At the November meeting, which will be the last for 1932, Mrs Fyfe will ice a Christmas cake, and Mrs Townley will speak on “Baking for Shows.” Wyndham W.D.F.U. The Wyndham W.D.F.U. celebrated its third birthday party yesterday afternoon, when Mrs W. Scott presided over a large attendance of members, including Mrs O. E. Niederer of Southland executive, and also several members from surrounding districts, all of whom were cordially welcomed by the president. The following concert programme was submitted:—Pianforte solo, Mrs W. Leckie; song Mrs W. Bennett; recitation Mrs R. D. McEwan; Song, Mrs T. Skinner; humorous character sketch, Mesdames D. Hopkins and Mrs T. Skinner. The accompaniments were played by Misses E. Dobbie and M. Hunter. Mrs O. E. Niederer lighted the candles on the birthday cake, and congratulated the branch on its growth and good work. The first slice of the cake was cut by Mrs K. McLennan, to whom members expressed pleasure at her attendance, after her recent indisposition. Afternoon tea was then partaken of. On the motion of Mrs Skinner, a vote of thanks was accorded the visitors, to Mrs Rabbidge for donating the beautiful cake; and to the President for the interest she had taken in the branch during the past year.
