ART UNIONS

LICENSES ISSUED.

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter.)

Wellington, October 7.

Three hundred and twenty-five licenses for the conducting of raffles and art unions in New Zealand were granted during the year ended March 31 last, states the annual report of the Department of Internal Affairs. Of these, seven were for alluvial gold with prizes totalling £4OOO in each c;cc. Lottery duty amounting to £13,867 16/6 was paid on the last four of these, the aggregate profits on all seven being £93,722 18/7. The conditions governing the issue of licenses were revised late in the year with the result that expenses were very considerably reduced and the net profits increased, in spite of the fact that the gross proceeds and consequently the lottery tax fell off as a result of the existing financial conditions.
