WINTON NOTES

CRICKET CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) At a meeting of the Winton Cricket Club on Monday evening last, the president, Mr T. W. Brandford, presided over a good attendance of members. The secretary reported that as a result of the canvass 20 nlayers had signified their intention of joining the club and taking an active part. It was agreed to carry on with the club and the following officials were appointed: General committee, Messrs H. Hodges, F. Cosgrove, W. George, W. Moore, T. Brass and W. McKinley; grounds committee, Messrs W. Cleine, W. Brandford, H. Hodges and W. Geary; captain, Mr H. Hodges; vice-captain, Mr F. Cosgrove; selectors, captain, vice-captain and Mr T. Horner. It was left to the grounds committee to endeavour to prepare a turf wicket. The secretary was instructed to write the Southland Cricket Association inquiring if any of the other clubs in 'the Western District were agreeable to the formation of a Western sub-as-sociation. The matter of arranging an opening day was left to a later date. Unemployment Committee.

At the monthly meeting of the Winton Unemployment Committee on Wednesday evening, the chairman, Mr F. Moore, presided over the following members: Messrs H. O. Barker, W. G. Clark, J. R. Hamilton, W. Hamilton and W. Norman.

The Southland Unemployment Executive wrote advising that the supply of meat for free distribution had been exhausted.

Mr J. Blackmun wrote asking for two men under Scheme 5 to repair flood damage to the bank of the channel running through his property. It was decided to have the work inspected by' the county foreman and if it were considered necessary that it be carried out under the supervision of Mr Norman. It was decided that if any men working under Scheme 5 were not giving a reasonable day’s work they would be required to stand down for a fortnight. The secretary reported that there were 53 men working under Scheme 5, 103 were out under 4A and four were booked for engagement under the latter scheme. Horticultural Society. At a meeting of the committee of the Winton Horticultural Society, the president, Mr J. A. Broom, presided over an attendance of 12 members. A financial statement of the recent spring fixture was submitted by the treasurer, showing a loss on the show. The statement was adopted. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the judges, Mrs M. G. McArthur and Mr D. Wildey, the. Winton Croquet Club and all other helpers. The following suggestions were noted: (1) A competition for highest number of white butterflies captured; (2) a competition for the best collection of named and mounted noxious weeds; (3) alter the primrose classes; (4) classes in vegetable section for vegetables

grown in a cottage garden. The secretary reported that the winners of the most points in the various sections at the recent fixture were as follows: Cut flowers, Mrs W. Chrystal; cut flowers (children), Victor Wright; floral decorations, Dr. M. Gow; vegetables, Mrs J. H. Thomson; produce, Miss M. Gerrard; nroduce (children), Doreen McDermott; wool work, Mrs J. S. Nelson. Tennis Opening. On Wednesday the official opening of the Winton Tennis Club took place. Conditions were fine, but a fairly strong wind was blowing. There was an unusually large attendance present and the four courts were always occupied. The courts were in first class order, having all been recently top-dressed. In declaring the season officially open, the president of the club, Mr T. Walker, extended a hearty welcome to both members and friends, and mentioned that it was gratifying to see such a large gathering present. The nrospects for a successful season were very bright and a record membership was expected. Magistrate’s Court. At. the monthly sitting of the Winton Magistrate’s Court, before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., on Wednesday morning, judgment was given in favour of plaintiff in the following undefended civil case: Winton Borough Council v. Agnes Jane Corrie for £5 10/11, court costs £3 9/6 and solicitor’s fee £1 16/6.
