CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS TO-DAY. (Special to Times.) Timaru, October 6. On the form displayed in the interIsland match there are likely to be some stirring struggles when the championship is fully under way. The chief interest to-day centred in the meeting of Miss B. Gaisford, the present champion, and Miss O. Kay, the former champion. There. was not a great deal between the pair on the day. Both gave a fine exhibition of driving, but the display on the greens, which are in splendid order, was somewhat indifferent. Over the first nine holes the pair were all square, but the superiority in putting on the home journey gave Miss Gaisford the match two up and one to play. The other matches were somewhat neglected, the gallery confining its attention to the champion. Very impressive form was shown by Miss Barnes-Graham (Poverty Bay), who, although not holing out the fourth hole owing to striking trouble, went out in approximately 32, three under bogey. She displayed fine control of her shots and should show up well in the championship. She beat Miss Rutherford (Hawarden) six and five. Beautiful golf was also played by Mrs Guy Williams (Masterton), who beat Mrs McCarthy six and five. Miss Beadel (Christchurch) played indifferently on the outward journey, but staged a brilliant recovery to beat Miss Stevens (Pupuke) one up. In the bogey handicap in the afternoon Miss Kay revealed brilliant form, returning 69 for 18 holes. This is easily a course record and the first time Miss Kay has ever broken 70 on a championship course. She went out in 32 and came back in 37, only twice being over bogey. Miss Gaisford did not compete in the bogey match. The first round of the championship is to be played to-morrow.
