TWO MEN CHARGED

ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES. ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, September 27. Charged with obtaining £29 from gold buyers in Christchurch by false pretences two Wellington men, Norris Blaxall, aged 39, a manufacturing jeweller, and Luke Stephen Dolan, aged 28, a ship’s steward, appeared to-day before Mr Mosley, S.M. It was alleged that accused defrauded buyers by selling silver medals covered with gold. According to the Chief Detective, in a statement made to the police at Wellington, Dolan said that Blaxall had told him that he had a good idea of making money by covering silver medals with gold and selling them. At the time Blaxall was in the process of making. one. Blaxall said that ha would inscribe the medals to make them look like trophies and would also give them a second-hand appearance. “I was out of work and owed Blaxall money,” said Dolan, “so I said I would go to Christchurch and sell the medals although I did not like the idea.” The accused, who elected to be tried by a jury, were both committed for trial. Counsel asked that bail should be made light in Dolan’s case.

The Magistrate: Dolan appears to have been what is colloquially termed “The Mug.” I am prepared to show leniency to him in the matter of bail. Dolan was allowed bail in £25, with one surety of £25. Blaxall’s bail was fixed at £2OO, with one surety of £2OO,
