NAVAL TRAGEDY
FRENCH SUBMARINE EXPLOSION IN ENGINE ROOM ONE OF CREW KILLED (United Press Assn'.—Telegraph Copyright.) Cherbourg, September 26. One man was killed and a number Were injured in an explosion in the • accumulators on the French submarine Persee, a sister ship of the Promothee, during her final trials. The captain wirelessed for the assistance of tugs which are towing the Persee to Cherbourg. A later message states that the explosion occurred in the Diesel engineroom and killed an engineer, Le Coq, fractured the skulls of three of the crew, and badly injured six others. Altogether 32 were hurt in the explosion or the fire which followed. The flames were quickly extinguished. The men rushed to the bridge and donned lifebelts preparatory to jumping into the sea, but the officers, reassured, ordered them to return to their stations. The explosion Was caused by the bursting of an engine Water-jacket. TWO DIE OF INJURIES. (Rec. 12.35 a.m.) Faris, September 27. Two more deaths have Occurred as a result of the explosion on the Persee. Several of the injured are on the dangerously ill list.
