BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

At a meeting of the committee of the Awarua Boating Club, it was decided to have the opening function for the coming season on Saturday, October 15. Summer pastimes will soon be in full swing at the port, the Tennis Club leading off with its opening on Saturday next, October 1. No date has yet been fixed for the Cricket Club’s opening, but as the Southland competition games begin on October . 15, Bluff players must necessarily get busy in the near future.

The weekly euchre tournaments run by the Returned Soldiers’ Association continue to draw excellent attendances at the Athenaeum. On Saturday night the games were closely contested, three players tieing for third place. Play was, as usual, under the supervision of Messrs T. Finnerty and W. Gilson. Winners for the night were: Mr R. Waddell 1, Mr E. Kelly 2, Mrs J. White, Mrs J. Brice and Mr M. McTigue (equal) 3. For most games won in the first round the prize was awarded to Mr J. Bryce and the second to Mr D. McKenzie. The consolation prize was won by Mr Cantrick.

Owing to the temporary absence from Bluff of a few office-holders in the Tennis Club it was decided to postpone the annual meeting of that body. With an early opening of the season in view, however, a preliminary meeting was held on Thursday evening last, mainly for the purpose of electing officers for the coming term. The president, Mr J. A. Hamilton, occupied the chair. Among other business transacted was the fixing of subscriptions at 15/- for men and 10/- for ladies and juniors. It was also agreed that if subscriptions are not paid by November 30 a levy of 2/6 per month be imposed. The fee for visitors was fixed at 2/- per week. It was decided to enter one B team in the competition. The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr P. A. de la PerreUe M.P.; president, Mr J. A.
