HIGHER BIRTH RATE

ENGLAND AND WALES. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, September 22. The birth rate, which has been on the decline in Britain, shows an increase in the returns issued by the Registrar-General for the quarter ended June 30. There were in that period 165,456 births in England and Wales, 1696 more than for the corresponding quarter last year, which corresponds to an annual rate of 16.6 per thousand. The mortality among babies under one year was equal to 58 per thousand live births.
