TAPANUI NOTES

School sports were held on the Tapanui football grounds on Saturday, September 17. Mr Mcßae, rector of the Tapanui High School, and the teachers supervized the sports, Misses Nicol and Kinnaird acting as referees for the basketball, and Messrs Kirk and Duff for the football. There was only a small attendance of spectators. The results were: Basketball—Primary grade, Tapanui A 4, Tapanui B 1; senior grade, Waikoikoi 5, Tapanui 1. Football—A grade, Tapanui B; B grade, Tapanui A; C grade, Tapanui B. A Tapanui golf team, nine ladies and seven men, played a match with the Dunrobin Club at Dunrobin. Tapanui won the match by nine games to five. In the finals for the knock-out competition played this week Miss Dale 81 beat Mrs E. J. Robertson 87. A medal match was won by Miss Howat, 69, Mrs M. Robertson, 70, being next.

The members of the Tapanui Bowling Club invited the Heriot Club and friends to a five hundred tournament in the pavilion on Tuesday. The first prize, a Doulton fruit dish, was won by Mrs Herbert, Heriot, and the men’s prize, an ash tray, by Mr Alex Black, Heriot.

There was a large attendance at the ball held by the Edievale Rifle Club on Friday evening, September 16. Mr O. Edie, president of the Rifle Club, presented the cups and trophies won during the year. He also thanked all those who had donated trophies for competition. The Edie Cup (given by Mr R. H. Edie) to be held by the winner for 12 months, was won by Rifleman H. Whyte, who also received a miniature cup from the club. Rifleman A. McPherson, who was runnerup in this competition, received a set of engraved hair brushes from the club. Rifleman A. Kennedy won the Otago farmers’ trophy, a case of spoons, in the handicap competition .at three ranges, the president, Mr O. Edie, who was runner-up, receiving a trophy given by Mr Walker, Lawrence. Rifleman W. Graham won the miniature cup, donated by Mr A. Herbert for most points in cup competition. Music for the ball was supplied by Mrs Ottrey (piano), Messrs Dackers (violin and saxophone). At the annual meeting of the Tapanui Poultry and Produce Club held on Tuesday evening, the balance-sheet showed a very satisfactory credit balance of £3O 11/-. The entries at the last show in farm produce and vegetables had shown a decrease, but the poultry section had been a great success. Mr J. W. Jarrold was re-elected president. It was decided to apply for July 8, 1933, as the date for the next annual show. •

The annual social of the Tapanui Presbyterian Church took place in the Sunday School Hall. A very good programme was given, a party of performers from St. Andrew’s Church, Gore, providing items as follows: Songs, Miss J. Wylie; recitations, Miss M. Spittle; musical trios, Misses R. Fleming, E. and M. Spittle; musical monologue, Miss Reid; humorous dialogue, Misses Reid and Spittle; solos, Messrs Sansom (Brydone) and J. E. Davies (Dunedin), Mrs D. Leslie, Mrs W. H. Norton; duets, Miss Dumbleton and Mr G. Dumbleton; recitation., Miss V. Stringers; anthems, Tapanui choir. The addresses for the evening were given by the Rev. D. McNeur, Mataura, and Mr N. Sansom, home missionary, Brydone. A farewell social was held in Kitching’s Hall, Kelso, on Tuesday last to farewell Mr and Mrs Martin prior to their departure for Waiwera South. Mr W. Clark, in making the presentation of a silver tea service on an oak tray to Mr and Mrs Martin, and a fountain pen to Master lan Martin, expressed the regret of all the residents of Kelso at losing Mr Martin, who had been stationmaster during the last three years, and had been a most courteous and obliging official. Mrs Martin had taken an active part in all the social activities of the district, and had been a member of the P.W.M.U. and Women’s Division. Mrs W. Steel, for the Women’s Division, asked Mrs Martin to accept a tea set as a gift from the Kelso division. The opportunity was also taken to present to Mr D. Hancox, cadet at Kelso, a pocket wallet and tobacco pouch as a gift from his Kelso friends on his leaving Kelso.
