CHARGES OF THEFT

ACCOUNTANT REMANDED.

(Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, September 23. Money I’aised through the efforts of the Labour Defence League for dependents of a number of men imprisoned as a result of disturbances here in May last has not been fully accounted for it is alleged. Before the Magistrate, Mr Mosley, to-day Herbert Edwin Barnsley, aged 52, an accountant, was charged that on July 22 he received 27/- and fraudulently omitted to account for 18/- of mat sum, thereby committing theft. Accused was remanded until September 29 in order that further inquiries may be made. Bail was allowed. The police said the case was a peculiar one and certain alleged receipts were said to be forgeries. Barnsley had been connected with the Labour Defence League.
