MEALS TOO DEAR

RAILWAY REFRESHMENT ROOMS. OBJECTION TO CHARGES. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, September 23. An objection to the high cost of refreshments at railway refreshment rooms was voiced in the House by Mr D. McDougall this afternoon when he gave notice that he would ask the Minister of Railways if he would take steps to have refreshment rooms removed from the control of the Railways Board in view of the fact that the board declared they could not reduce the charges. Referring to the cost of bread, butter, ham and tea, Mr McDougall said that what cost the refreshment rooms 5/6 was retailed to the public for £4 19/4 and this being so, it would be to the advantage of the public if the rooms were leased to private enterprise.
