JULY WEATHER

COLD SUNLESS CONDITIONS. RAINFALL ABOVE AVERAGE. The month of July which came to a close yesterday was cold and wintry throughout with a continuance of . the sunless conditions which characterized its predecessor, June. There were actually no very severe storms except for one of a westerly nature on the 30th when there was a slight fall of hail. Rain fell on 19 days out of the 31, the total fall for the month being 3.74 in. This, when compared with the normal average of 3.55 in. calculated over many years show an excess of ,19in. although it is 2.38 in. below the total for July of last year—an unusually wet month. The long succession of wet days has resulted in the ground becoming very cold and damp. There is as yet a deficiency in the sunshine recorded at Invercargill. There were five days when it failed to make an impression and for the remaining 26 a total of 100.75 hours was registered. The hardest frosts so far this winter made their appearance during July, nine degrees being recorded on the 10th and six on the 29th. Five calm days were experienced, the winds being distributed as follows over the remainder of the month: North-west, 10; north-east, 8; south-west, 4; east, 2; west, 1; and south-east, 1. The following are the detailed returns, as supplied by Mr J. L. Lennie, weather recorder to the Government:—
