LUMSDEN NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

At a special meeting of the Lumsden Town Board on July 21 the contract for the supply of 400 yards of gravel was let to M. McKay, of Gore. The rate for the year 1932-33 was fixed at 3?d in the £ on unimproved values and -Id in the £ on capital value for charitable aid rate. The sanitary rate was fixed at 15/- per annum for one-monthly service, half-rate to be charged where septic tanks were installed The euchre tournaments run on alternate Tuesday evenings by the Plunket Society and the Anglican Church Committee are still being very well attended. At the last church evening prizes were won by Mrs Welsh and Mr A. McDonnell and consolation prizes by Mrs J. Campbell and Mr J. Ogilvy. On Tuesday evening at the Plunket evening the prizes, which

■were donated by Mrs H. Graham, were won by Mrs Ogilvy, sen., and Mr J. Ogilvy. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Bain and Mr G. Aitcheson.

The members of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild met at the vicarage on Wednesday, when Mrs Wilson presided. The ladies intend holding a sale of work at an early date in December and will meet on Wednesday afternoon at the vicarage. The members of the vestry have been busy clearing the church grounds and a big improvement is already noticeable.

During the week-end there passed away yet another of the very old identities, Mrs Annie Dunn. Mrs Dunn had been a resident of Lumsden for nearly 50 years and of late years had lived a retired life. Mrs Dunn was predeceased by her husband, Mr Patrick Dunn, and her daughter, Mrs Nielsen, some years ago. The funeral was conducted at the Lumsden Cemetery on Tuesday by the Rev. Father Woods.

The hockey match played at Lumsden on Saturday, July 23, against Waikaia created a great deal of interest. On the form shown against Riversdale the preceding Saturday supporters felt confident that Lumsden would put up a good showing against the almost invincible Waikaia teams. Both teams played _ a great game, the result, a draw, being a very fair indication of the play. Trial matches are being played this week to select a Northern team to meet Eastern on Wednesday next. The following Saturday at Lumsden the Northern team will play another team selected from the rest of the Northern District players. The selectors are hoping to have several players who will be picked to play for Eastern at the hockey tournament to be held in Dunedin.

Mrs James Clouston accompanied Mrs McDonald and Mrs Mclnnes, Invercargill, to Queenstown to assist in the forming of a Girl Guide Company. Mrs T. McCutcheon is in Lumsden

visiting old friends and is the guest of Mrs E. Soper. Mr and Mrs Kier, Balfour, are guests of Mr W. Dripps. Mr and Mrs T. J. McDonald, Invercargill, are spending their annual leave in Lumsden.
