BALFOUR NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The euchre tourney held in the Longridge North School on Tuesday evening in aid of the school funds was well patronized, 24 players participating. The prizes were won by Mrs A. O. Henderson and Mr F. Fraser. On Wednesday afternoon a trial hockey match took place on the Balfour ground. The selectors were given a good chance to judge the ability of players, but as some of those nominated were unable to attend, the team to meet Eastern on August 3 will not be selected until after the seven-a-side tourney at Waikaia on Saturday. Miss M. Wright (Riversdale) is assured of the goal-keeper’s position, although the Balfour goalie, R. Herron, is not far behind, and with more experience must warrant consideration later on. Of the full-backs, R. McDonald (Waikaia), J. Simms (Lumsden), A. McMath (Balfour) and W. Arnott (Balfour) are the best seen this season, but unfortunately the exOtagoite, Miss Arnott, is not available for representative games. The half-backs and forwards will be hard to pick, but of these Miss K. Bond, the hard-shooting Waikaia centre-for-ward, is a certainty. The monthly meeting of the Balfour branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket rooms on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Wilson presided. Plunket Nurse Sims forwarded the following report for June: Visits to rooms, adults 14, babies 11, older children 6. There were no new cases for the month. Two babies have bronchitis, otherwise the health of the babies is good. _ The usual monthly meeting of the Northern District Rugby SubUnion was held on Thursday evening, Mr James Campbell presiding over the following: Messrs L. Guyton and J. Kelly (Riversdale), D. Alexander and M. J. Hickey (Balfour), D. Baillie (Lumsden), J. McMath (Referees’ Association) and Mr M. Rasmussen. , The secretary of the Eastern District Sub-Union forwarded a cheaue for £5, being Northern’s share of the gate at the Trust Cup match at Gore. The secretary of the Wakatipu SubUnion wrote inviting a team to play a match at Queenstown. It was decided to advise that, owing to Northern having a number of matches away from home, lack of finance would not permit a team to visit Queenstown this season. The secretary was instructed to communicate with West Otago regarding the date for the annual fixture. Mr L. Guyton was appointed manager of the team to meet West Otago. Mr D. Baillie was elected manager of the team to play Eastern for the Grant Cup. It was decided that the Eastern junion team be asked to return last year s game. The game ..'ill be at Balfour and August 13 was suggested as a suitable date. The selectors of the junior team are Messrs J. McMath, J. Ibbotson and J. Campbell. A telegram was received from Captain Prictor, representing Messrs J. and W. Buchanan Ltd., stating that his firm was willing to nresent caps for competition among senior teams in the district. The offer was acccptIt was decided that a knock-out competition be he’d and the following draw was arranged: August Balfour v. Riversdale at Riversdale; Country Pirat-- - v.
