CRICKET IN ENGLAND
TEAM FOR AUSTRALIAN TOUR. POWERFUL BATTING SIDE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 29, It is officially announced that Robins, Brown, Wyatt, Pataudi, Allen, Larwood and Voce have been invited to go to Australia, making the total thirteen. Three others will be announced later. The capacity of the English side might be summarized as powerful in batting, fielding and wicket-keeping, somewhat problematical but potentially good in bowling, and sound and orthodox, if uninspiring, in leadership. The ability of Pataudi, Wyatt, Allen, Voce, Brown and Robins is unknown on Australian grounds. Brown, who is 21 years of age, is strongly-built, cheerful and red-haired. He is temperamentally suitable for big cricket. There could never be much doubt about Pataudi’s selection on the grounds of sheer merit, and the sentimental objection to two Indians being in the team was over-ridden by the slender Nawab’s great batting form. The choice of Allen is very wise, especially in view of his hostile bowling, good batting and fielding, and also Larwood’s liability to break down. There are already seven amateurs, and there may still be another. Jack Hobbs, who is 50 in December, has postponed his retirement from first class cricket. He has already scored 1392 runs this season and feels fit. He says he hopes to play for Surrey again in 1933. AUSTRALIAN TEAM CANADA BEATEN IN TEST. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Winnipeg, July 30. Australia defeated Canada by an innings and 21 runs in a two-day test match which ended to-day. The Canadian team scored 88 in the first innings, while Australia declared with five wickets for 263. The Canadians scored 154 in the second innings.
