BASKETBALL

OTAGO BEAT SOUTHLAND. SECOND GRADE MATCH. The Otago and Southland second grade basketball teams met in the Drill Hall on Saturday afternoon, and after a good display Otago won by 14 goals to 6. The teams were: — Otago (blue and white). —Forwards, M. McDonald, L. Hoffmann, O. Wright; centres, M. Hannagan, V. Irwin, E. Chapman-Cohen; defenders, D. Turner, R. Smythe, J. Buchanan. Southland (maroon) —Forwards, I. Egerton, N. Norman, R. Butson; centres, J. Hilton, E. Norman, C. Atkinson; defenders, K. Rutherford, M. Collett, W. Clark. Otago won the toss and chose goal, taking the eastern, which is the best goal, first. Southland commenced badly E. Norman's first ball being intercepted in the centre and travelling to the Otago forwards where it was caught by W. Clark and returned to C. Atkinson, who got it out to the forwards. They, however, failed to get it in a position for scoring and D. Turner put it out of play. Otago cleverly caught the throw-in and the ball went quickly to the forwards where it was rescued by K. Rutherford and W. Clark. The Southland centres could not hold it and M. McDonald tried for goal, but did not find the ring. M. Collett then passed the ball to the centre where it went to the forwards whose play was spoiled by the clever work of D. Turner. This player sent the ball out to the side-line where it passed into the Otago forward line. Both O. Wright and L. Hoffmann took shots but were unsuccessful. Once more E. Norman sent the ball away to I. Egerton who only managed to tip it over the back line. Otago caught the throw-in. Despite the efforts of Southland’s centre the ball again went to M. McDonald who did not score. An unguarded pass against a Southland defender saw the ball given to M. McDonald who scored. Otago 1, Southland nil. The game had been in progress six minutes. From the throw off, Southland got the ball away to the forward third, but an unguarded pass gave D. Turner the ball and she passed it to her centres who sent it away to the forwards, but W. Clark spoiled M. McDonald’s chance to goal. The ball passed to the centre third where Southland lost it again and once again it went to M. McDonald, who scored. Otago 2, Southland 0. Southland got the ball away from the throw off and some good passing resulted in R. Butson shooting. Otago 2, Southland 1. Each side now scored in turn from their own throw off. After the next throw off Southland kept getting the ball to the forwards, but the defenders were so strong that no opportunity was afforded Southland to score. Eventually Southland lost control in the centre and the ball went again to M. McDonald, who scored. Otago 4, Southland 2. Southland lost the ball in the centre and it went to M. McDonald, who put it out of play. It was rescued by M. Collett and passed through the centres to R. Butson, who was unlucky not to score. R. Smythe caught it and in some of the best passing of the match the ball went to O. Wright who scored. Otago 5, Southland 2. From the throw off Southland kept control and I. Egerton secured and scored. Otago 5, Southland 3. Southland’s centres for the rest of the first half could not hold Otago at all and the ball was each time intercepted and passed to Otago’s forward third. Despite the efforts of M. Collett M. McDonald managed to catch and hold the ball. Half-time ended with the scores: Otago 9, Southland 4. Otago opened the second spell and got the ball to the forward third where M. Collett intercepted and it went to [. Egerton, who did not hold the ball and thus gave the play to Otago. The visitors made use of the advantage with the result that another goal was added to Otago’s score. Otago 10, Southland 4. E. Norman got the ball well away to Southland's forwards, but N. Norman’s attempt at goal was cleverly intercepted by J. Buchanan. The Otago centres took control and the ball went to M. McDonald, who did not score. W. Clark caught the ball and C. Atkinson passed to R. Butson who passed to N. Norman and found the ring. Otago 10. Southland 5. Otago scored four more goals in the next few minutes the forwards spoiling all the attempts of Southland to get the ball to their forward line. When the scores stood at Otago 14, Southland 5, the Southland centres put up a great fight to get the ball to the forward third and increase Southland’s score. The forwards, ; however, were outplayed by Otago’s defenders everywhere in the court and in consequence only one further goal was added. The game ended with the scores: Otago 14, Southland 6. Even the keenest of Southland’s supporters will agree that the better team won. Miss E. B. Pay refereed. After the game both teams were the guests of the executive at afternoon tea and in the evening of Mrs A. Noble, vice-president, at her home in North road. Yesterday the visitors were taken to Otatara and left by last night’s express. SECONDARY SCHOOL MATCHES.
