HIGHLAND SOCIETY

GORE BODY. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The 19th annual meeting of the Gore District Highland Society was held in the Gaiety Hall on Tuesday, Chief Hector Gordon presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, the balancesheet showing the society to be in a very satisfactory position. The election and installation were then proceeded with. Chief Gordon was re-elected. The annual report referred to the able address given by the Rev. F. M. Beattie on the eve of St. Andrew’s Day, and also to the very fine attendance of members at the church parade held in St. Andrew’s Hall the following Sunday. During the year the society exchanged visits with St. Andrew’s Society, Wyndham, and the Mataura Highland Society. Each society in turn provided a very enjoyable musical programme. Mr Jenkins moved that the following resolution be forwarded to the Prime Minister of Great Britain: “The Gore District Highland Society extends its heartiest congratulations to our brother Scot, the Rt. Hon. Ramsay MacDonald, Prime Minister of Great Britain, as chairman of the Lausanne Conference, on the success of his labours. By his tact, ability and personality he helped the delegates assembled to come to an amicable understanding on the problems which confront the great nations of to-day, thereby adding honour to his name as a worthy son of auld Scotland.”
