YESTERDAY’S SITTING.

TRAFFIC BREACHES,

At yesterday’s sitting of the Police Court Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M., dealt with several offenders charged with breaches of the traffic regulations. Frank Sheridan and Thomas White (Riverton), who did not appear, were each fined 20/- and costs 12/-, for failing to have the unladen weight painted on the offside of their motor lorry. The defendant Thomas White was also fined 20/- and costs 12/- for failing to have his lorry equipped with a reflector. , John Cunningham, who pleaded guilty to driving a motor car without a license, was convicted and discharged. Similarly charged, Francis A. Dawson and John Maxwell Winders were each fined 10/- and costs 10/-. Arthur James Thompson (Waimatua) was fined 10/- and costs 18/-. Mervyn G. Barlow, for driving a motor car without a license and for causing it to travel backward for more than a reasonable distance, was fined 10/- and costs 10/- on each charge. William Campbell (Tokanui), who did not appear, was fined 20/- and costs 10/- for failing to have his motor lorry properly lighted. Pleading guilty to riding a bicycle without a light after dar’-, Peter Duncan Ferguson, a schoolboy, was ordered to pay costs 10/-. Similarly charged, John xlynn (Tisbury), Martin Short, John James Stott, Eric John William Gray and John Taylor were each fined 2/6 and costs 10/-. William Cavanagh (Kennington), and Rita Munro were each ordered to pay costs 12/-. . Robert Pullar was convicted and discharged for riding a bicycle without a 'ight after dark. Similarly charged, William Sutton and Daniel James Welsh were each convicted and discharged. For driving a motor car without a tail light, Albert Frederick Helm was ordered to pay costs 10/-. Charged with driving an unlicensed vehicle and with driving without a motor driver’s license, John Campbell Jamison was fined £2 and costs 10/- on the first charge, and 20/- and costs 10/- on the second. Harold Eugene Melhop, for failing to reduce the speed of his motor car to 15 miles an hour when traversing a railway crossing and failing to keep a vigilant look-out for approaching trains, was fined 10/- and costs 10/-. John A. Mangan (Tuatapere), who admitted having no heavy traffic license in respect to his motor lorry, was fined £2 and costs 10/-.

For riding a motor cycle with sidecar attached but without a light on the side-car, and also for failing to have a driver’s license, James Bowden Rillstone was ordered to pay costs 10/- on each charge. James Campbell, by his counsel, admitted two charges of breaches of the heavy traffic regulations in respect of two motor lorries, and Brian Mansfield Sims, a son-in-law, one other similar charge.

The defendant Campbell was fined £3 and costs 10/- on the one charge and £2 and costs 10/- on the other. Sims was fined £2 and costs 10/- in respect to the charge to which he pleaded guilty. James Hogan (Clifton), did not appear to answer a charge of behaving in an offensive manner in the Invercar-gill-Bluff train on June 25. Evidence was given by the guard on the train that the defendant, when asked for his ticket, used abusive language. He was under the influence of liquor. The defendant was fined £2, costs 15/- and witness’s expenses 11/6.
