IMPORTING OPIUM

SEAMAN FINED. ACCUSED’S CONFESSION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 26. Thomas Daniel Meehan, a member of the crew of the Maunganui, which arrived from Sydney was caught leaving the wharf with 10 half-pound tins of opium valued at approximately £2OO. He was fined £125, in default six months’ imprisonment on a charge of importing opium. Meehan said he was acting as a runner and his share of the proceeds was £1 per tin, if the consignment was landed. He said that he previously landed one lot of ten tins.

He was allowed a fortnight to pay the fine, conditional on entering into a bond of £l5O with a surety of £l5O.
