FIRE AT BLUFF

RESIDENCE DESTROYED. (From Our Correspondent.) Shortly after seven o’clock last evening a fire occurred at Bluff, resulting in the total destruction of a residence in Elizabeth street owned and occupied by Mr W. Gilson. The brigade arrived promptly, but owing to a lack of water facilities was powerless to check the outbreak. For a time surrounding houses were also in danger owing to a high wind, but after strenuous work with buckets by the brigade further outbreaks were averted. Mr Gilson’s house, a brick and roughcast bungalow of five rooms, was built about two years ago. The owner will be a heavy loser, as the contents, of which practically nothing was saved., were not insured. Mr and Mrs Gilson had gone out only about half an hour before the fire occurred and are at a loss to account for it.
