The following are the official tables of points at the completion of both basketball competitions in the Central District:— —Senior.—
A senior tourney will be held at the tennis courts at Winton to-day. Ryal Bush and Browns play off for the junior premiership to-day. No senior games took place last week.
Ryal Bush gave a good display last week in defeating Rovers while Spar Bush and Drummond had a hard tussle, in which the former emerged the victors by a two-point margin. The representative programme commences next Wednesday when two teams representing the Eastern District will visit Winton to try conclusions with the local representatives. The following Wednesday Town representatives will meet the local district teams. This season the Central District will field even more formidable sides than in previous years, and the task of the selectors in choosing the best possible combinations is going to be a difficult one. The junior team this season will also be an improvement on last year, this being indicated by the high standard of play attained this season in the junior division.
There was little between Spar Bush and Drummond in their match last week. The defenders of both teams played really well, although the Drummond trio were called upon to do the most. The Spar Bush forwards had many more opportunities than those of Drummond, but they were not made the best use of. The Drummond shoots played with a good deal of accuracy with Miss J. Turner particularly prominent.
Ryal Bush, who defeated Rovers last week, have worked up a remarkably good combination, and the fact that this team are one ol the finalists after their first season in Central District basketball, gives some idea of the progress made. The game against Rovers revealed that the team are particularly strong in each third, the court work of the centres and the forwards being of a high standard. The work of the forwards was exceedingly good with Misses J. Gates and E. Dowler conspicuous. The district teams will probably be announced towards the end of this week. Although to the majority, the players included in the Southland second grade representative team, seem certainties for places, to some not all of these members should be included. The A team will not be as difficult to choose as the B, although at the same time there will be very little between either. Misses M. Balch (Winton) and Miss I. Egerton (Kia Ora) seem to be pretty sure of their places in the forward third of the A team. Miss N. Norman (Kia Ora) sems to have the best chance of completing the trio, although there are Misses E. Payne (Limehills), M. Finlay (Oreti) and K. Crowe (Kia Ora), who are all worthy of consideration. The wing centre positions may be entrusted to Misses C. Atkinson (Lochiel) and F. Thornbury (Kia Ora), while there are also Misses A. Holland (Winton), M. Forbes (Lochiel) and K. McHugh (Limehills). For the centre position Miss E. Norman (Kia Ora) may be the final choice while Miss J. Finlay (Oreti) is also playing well at present. Miss H. Clark (Lochiel) will be one of the first chosen for the defence line. Since receiving an ankle injury some time back Miss M. Collett (Kia Ora) has not been displaying her true form and although she is a capable defender there may be others chosen before her.
Miss J. Cowie (Lochiel) is very capable and should receive consideration, while others who are well in the running are Miss A. Butler (Kia Ora), Miss E. Pierce (Winton), Miss M. Butler (Kia Ora) and Miss M. Thomson (Limehills). The Ryal Bush-Browns contest for the junior premiership should result in a close and interesting contest. Ryal Bush may have an advantage of height, but their forwards will have no easy task against the sound defence line of Browns.
With all the senior teams taking part in the tournament to-day some interesting games should eventuate. In all, five games will be played and also the junior final, and these games will comprise a lengthy afternoon’s programme. With very little between any of the senior teams, the competition should be keen throughout.
