UNEMPLOYMENT
ISSUE OF TREASURY BILLS. NO ARRANGEMENT WITH BANKS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, July 6. With reference to the statement in the Press with regard to the issue of Treasury bills for £220,000 for the relief of unemployment, the Prime Minister stated to-day that no such arrangement had been made with the banks. “It is correct,” said Mr Forbes, “as stated by the Minister of Employment before he left New Zealand that the Government will provide extra funds for the Unemployment Board to meet the extra demands that are arising during the winter months, but this does not mean that any specific issue of Treasury bills is contemplated for the purpose; As indicated already in the Press, it may be necessary to strengthen the Unemployment Fund but the manner in which this will be done will be considered when Parliament assembles.” He hoped local bodies and the public would continue to assist the Government as far as lay in their power by providing work and relief so that the extra money made available would go to the furthest possible extent in meeting the situation.
