Miss Margaret Crawford, Don street, was hostess at afternoon tea on Saturday. Mrs Napier, Waimate, is the guest of her daughter, Mrs Allan Speight, Redcliff station.

Miss Janet Rogers, who was the guest of Miss Margaret Crawford, Don street, returned to Gore on Monday.

Mrs Quaife came down from Dunedin on Tuesday, to be the guest of Mrs Allan Speight, Redcliff station. Mrs J. A. MacDonald, Anderson’s Bay, motored down from Dunedin on Saturday and is the guest of her mother, Mrs 0. W. H. Strettell, Ythan street.

Miss Bentham and Miss Hazel Bentham, of Auckland, who Were the guests of their sister, Mrs T. S. Tomlinson, Swinton street, left on Wednesday for Lyttelton. Mrs A. H. Mr and Mrs R. E. Bennetts, Dunbarton, Roxburgh, who spent the weekend as the guests of Mrs T. M. Ranxin, Yarrow street, returned home on Tuesday. The engagement is announced of Thelma Valmai, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Leaver, late of Nelson and now resident in Suva, Fiji, to George McChesney, second son of Mr and Mrs D. H. Thomson, 109 Gala street, Invercargill, and at present on the staff of the Boys’ Grammar School, Suva.

Mesdames R. Stout, B. W. Hewat, H. J. Macalister and Emrys Thomas were hostesses at bridge last evening at the residence of Mrs K. The Arts and Crafts Circle of the Women’s Club met on Wednesday evening. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames A. G. Seddon, R. Kingsland and Drummond. Mrs C. F. Hackworth, in the absence of Mrs Seddon, introduced Miss Ruth Featherstone, who gavo- a short travel talk. So interested were the members in this lecturette that Miss Featherstone was requested to continue it at the next meeting of the circle. At the conclusion of the address, Mrs Hackworth moved a vote of thanks to Miss Featherstone. This circle, which usually meets every fortnight, will not meet for a month, owing to the intervention of the Coster Fair.

The monthly meeting of the Methodist Women’s Social Club was held in the Jed street hall on Wednesday afternoon. The room was tastefully decorated with holly and chrysanthemums and a large number of friends and members were present. Mrs J. Macdonald (president) welcomed the visitors on behalf of the club. An enjoyable programme was arranged as follows: —Pianoforte duet, Mrs Hamilton and Miss Foggart; solos, Mesdames Wilcox and J. D. Campbell, and Miss I. Brown. The competition was won by Mrs Winning. During the afternoon a bouquet was presented to Mrs D. J. Wesney by the secretary, Mrs W. E. McLean. A dainty afternoon tea was handed round by the club members, and a very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the club’s closing song. The lounge in the Women’s Club was en fete yesterday when over thirty members entertained Miss Esther James to morning tea. The president welcomed the guest of honour, and introduced her to the gathering, and Mrs J. G. Macdonald, on behalf of the garden circle, presented her with a posy of primroses. With a wealth of humorous anecdote, Miss James gave an interesting address on her long walk, commencing with her adventures at the beginning of her journey and briefly touching on the visits to each town. Miss Sheila Stewart went up to Dunedin on Tuesday to be the guest of Miss Dorothy Clark, Anderson’s Bay, for the Archerfield Old Girls’ Ball. Mr and Mrs J. Ireland, Grasmere Terrace, left by the express this morning for Auckland en route to Norfolk Island, where they intend to reside permanently. Mrs J. B. Sale, Lewis street, was hostess at afternoon tea on Thursday. Hexguests included: Mesdames H. C. Stevens, Nevill, A. B. Moffett, W. A. Oliver, R. N. Todd, and E. W. Howorth. The bridge circle of the S.G.H.S.O.G. A. met on Wednesday evening in the Women’s Club. The prizes were won by Miss D. Williamson (highest score) and Miss R. Davies (hidden number). At the weekly meeting of the bridge circle of the Women’s Club on Monday evening there were nine tables in play, the prizes being won by Mrs W. G. Tait (highest score) and Mrs S Ritchie (hidden number). Mrs F. D. Morrah, Grey street, entertained two tables at bridge on Thursday evening. Those playing included: Misses Kitty Hazlett, Mary Webb, Anita Tapley; Drs. David Jennings and Roy Howells, Messrs Malcolm Morrah (Hawkes Bay) and D. Morrah.

Mrs Brown, on behalf of the members, welcomed Mrs Chewings, who has been absent for nine months. Miss Blackie, of the Technical College, gave an interesting address on “Diet,” which was much appreciated. Mrs A. McDonald proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Blackie. Miss Esther James, accompanied by the Mayoress. Mrs John Miller, paid a visit to the league meeting and was welcomed by the president and members. She spoke briefly on the object of her trek, namely, to advertise New ‘Zealand goods and foods. She was wearing a New Zealand costume, boots, hose, gloves and the bag in which she carried her books was also New Zealand made.
