GOLF

NEW ZEALAND TEAM. PROMISING YOUNG PLAYERS. Sydney, June 17. : Writing in the Daily Telegraph Hector Morrison says : “The youngsters in the New Zealand team, Silk and Hornabrook, covered themselves with glory yesterday and will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the State championship next week.” WYNDHAM CLUB NOTES.

(By

“Mimihau.”)

Although very wet underfoot, overhead conditions were ideal for golf when members played the June medal. The greens were again in good trim. About 18 players took part in the match and Rout, who was in good form, put in an excellent card reading 90 —25—65. Pankhurst, who plays his game on Saturday, had a difficult task ahead of him to better this score, but nevertheless put in a very fine round of 85—17—68. The least said about the remainder of the cards the better as everyone seemed to have an off day. The best was Crawford’s with 89—14—75. Crawford has been playing very consistently to his handicap lately and a win is about due.

The ringer competition was again altered after a stroke round and the June medal competition and Henderson still holds pride of place with the very fine score of 67 —4—63. Gibson and Barnett are running the captain close with scores of 74—10J>—631 and 69 —5—64 respectively. The next best are Heath 78—12—66; Harper 79—10—69; Pankhurst 78—7 J—70?,; Ball 82—11—71; Crawford 79—7—72.

Handicap reductions are as follows: Henderson, 9 to 8; Pankhurst, 17 to 15; Crawford, 15 to 14; Rout, 25 to 21. On Wednesday a party of 12 golfers from Gore visited Wyndham and a most enjoyable afternoon’s golf was played. The game resulted in a win for Wyndham by 7 matches to 5. The results, with Wyndham names first, were aq follows:—Henderson beat Scott 1 up; Barnett lost to Hawke 1 down; Crawford beat R. Aitken 2 and 1; Pankhurst beat Perry 6 and 4; Harper lost to Domigan 4 and 3; Gibson beat Chapman 1 up; Rout lost to J. Aitken 2 down; Ball beat Finlayson 2 up; Rice beat Ritchie 1 up; Heath lost to McMillan 1 down; Tangney lost to Poff 4 and 3; Traynor beat Turnbull 4 and 2.

After an enjoyable afternoon tea provided by the ladies, Mr Ball on behalf of the Wyndham team thanked the Gore players for paying a visit and he hoped that the members from Gore had enjoyed the game as much as the Wyndham players had. Mr Aitken, on behalf of the Gore Club, said he was pleased to again come down and spend the afternoon on the very fine and interesting links. The course was in perfect order and although they did not win they felt that the tables would be turned when the Wyndham team visited Gore. RIFLE SHOOTING INVERCARGILL MINIATURE CLUB. On Wednesday evening last the Invercargill Defence Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot when a match was fired against the Wyndham Miniature Club. About 20 of the Wyndham members made the journey and the shooting was of a high standard, the local club winning by a margin of 26 points. Both the clubs also fired their first round for the R. Challenge Cup competition (presented by A. and W. McCarthy, of Invercargill), but the final scores will not be known until the targets have been checked. The weekly competition of the Invercargill Club was also fired, the highest scorers off the rifle being T. Stevenson 78, J. Morrison 78, B. Tinnock 77 and Miss Wall 76. The following is a list of scores, with handicap:

Prior to the shooting the Wyndham' Club were welcomed by president A. R. Wills, and they were afterwards entertained at supper by the local club.
