SCIENTIST DROWNED

PROFESSOR J. W. GREGORY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.15 p.m.) London, June 14. News has been received that Professor John Walter Gregory was drowned in the Urubamba river, Northern Peru, while leading an expedition to study volcanic movements. The newspapers pay tribute to _ his scientific attainments and explorations in Africa and Australia. Professor J. W. Gregory was bom in 1864, and from 1879 to 1887 was engaged in the wool business. He was a member of a number of geological expeditions, and was naturalist with Sir Martin Conway’s expedition across Spitzbergen in 1896. From 1900 to 1904 he was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Melbourne. He was the recipient of high awards, and also the author o£ a number of scientific works.
