RIVERSDALE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

To celebrate the twenty-first anniversary of the Girl Guide movement throughout the Empire, the Riversdale company held a social evening in the sporty pavilion on Friday evening. Captain O’Brien and Lieutenant Wright had arranged a very enjoyable programme, consisting of musical items, competitions, games and gramophone selections. During last week the guides were tsked to bring something towards the relief of the unemployed. Quite a collection of useful articles was donated. Besides the guides, the president of the Guide Committee, Mrs T. Campbell, and Mesdames J. Denniston, A. Bannerman and Miss Bayles were present. On Saturday morning a number of Girl Guides, under the control of Captain O’Brien gathered at the school and planted a tree to commemorate the twenty-first birthday of the guide movement. The president briefly explained to the girls the meaning of the event. A church parade of the guides was held at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday, at which there was a good muster. The Rev. J. J. Bates preached an appropriate sermon. The attendance at the Waipounamu School Committee’s euchre tourney on Thursday night was most gratifying to the management. After an enjoyable evening’s play the winners were found to be Mrs J. Clark and Mr H. Clark. The consolation prizes went to Mr B. Watt and Miss J. Watt. The management is indebted to Mr and Mrs T. Pollock for donating the prizes. After supper a meeting was held and it was decided to call a meeting on the coming Wednesday to discuss the holding of a leap year ball. The golf course has been well patronized lately by local players, while recently a number of outside players spent an enjoyable day there with the local enthusiasts.
