GREAT ADVANCE BENEFIT TO WOMEN PROMISED ISOLATION OF ELEMENT (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) Ottawa, May 27. Dr J. S. Collip, of McGill University, Montreal, announced to the Royal Society of Canada to-day the isolation of the sex hormone in a pure form. It was described as a great advance in the chemistry of life and was acclaimed by the many biologists in attendance. Tho isolation of this elusive element of life has been said to offer possibilities of a great boon to women, whose physical well-being may be much improved by its use. Dr Collip’s announcement came during his presidential address to the Biological Science Section. He described the progress of this work, which had been conducted over a period of years by a group of young scientists at McGill, headed by himself, and he also conducted a discussion regarding the hormone in relation to the pituitary and other ductless glands, the ovaries and the placenta. It is understood that the next problem is to accumulate this hormone in its pure form in sufficient quantities to make it accessible to physicians in treating illnesses peculiar to women. It is stated that if made available it would result in relieving women _ of much of the pain connected with childbearing and the change of life. PNEUMONIA PROBLEM SOLUTION BELIEVED FOUND. Toronto, May 27. The discovery in the Connaught Laboratories here of a quick method of analysing types of pneumonia to allow the administration of serum particularly adapted to prevent developments was greeted by the Canadian Public Health Association to-day as one of the greatest advances yet made in the fight against the diseasei The announcement was made before the annual convention by Dr M. M. Brown, of Toronto. He stated that the announcement practically meant a solution of the pneumonia problem.
