OTAUTAU NOTES
EUCHRE. - (From Our Correspondent.) Forty-two were present at the euchre social on Monday evening in aid of the funds of the unemployed, the prize-winners being Miss Hassed and Mr W. Pulley. The i runners-up were Mrs Rawlinson and Mr S. Hale. The previous week Mrs Rawlinson won the ladies’ prize, with Miss O’Brien runner-up. Messrs W. Nekal and C. Hope 1 tied for the gentlemen’s prize, the former I winning in the play-off and the latter being ( runner-up. Bible Class Camp. I Preparations are well in hand for hold- : ing the Southland Methodist Young Men’s Bible Class camp at "Redfern” at Easter. A special feature, and one that will be i appreciated, is the fact that Dr. Clifford ■ James, medical missionary from the Solo- ' mon Islands, will address the campers on Easter Sunday. Presentation. Prior to his removal to Invercargill, Mr I W. Tressler was met by the railway staff. ' In making the presentation of a smoker’s ' outfit to the departing guest Mr Daly , (ganger) referred to the fact that he had been a good and conscientious workman, these remarks being supported by Messrs D. , Campbell, T. Kelly and L. Davis. The reI cipient suitably acknowledged the gift. I St Patrick’s Social and Dance. The local committee fittingly celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by holding a social and I dance in the Town Hall. The Green Valley orchestra supplied good music, while Mr A. Matheson acted as M.C. The following items were contributed, one and all receiving a good hearing. Solos, Miss F. McKay and Miss M. Campbell; step dance, Misses Angus, L. and N. Maxwell and musical saw item, Miss Playfair. Winter Show. A meeting of stewards of the Winter Show was held in the board room on Monday evening, when Mr A. Fisher (president) occupied the chair. It was decided to alter the dates of the show to Wednesday and Thursday, May 25 and 26, and to ask the Hon. Adam Hamilton, MJ?., to open the function. Obituary. General regret was expressed in the township when it became known that Mr W. Stevens had passed away at the Southland Hospital following an operation. He was well-known and highly respected in the district, and was of a bright and cheery disposition. Fie saw service in the Great War and. the wounds received there contributed greatly to his death. Deceased was buried in Invercargill on Sunday, some of his soldier comrades being present to pay their last respects. He leaves a widow and young family.
