GIRL GUIDES

By

“ATALANTA."

Lost. For some time past now, various articles have been missed from the Guide Rooms causing a good deal of inconvenience to the owners. The most important loss is that of the gramophone records, which no one has seen for a long time. If anyone has borrowed them will she please have them returned at once. Please remember that nothing may bo removed from the Guide Rooms without tho permission of the local secretary. St John’s Brownies. Last Saturday St. John’s Brownies celebrated their sixth birthday party with a picnic at Thomson’s Bush, where they were the guests of St. John’s Ranger Patrol. Gladstone Brownie Pack was also invited, and thus about forty Brownies had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with games and races. The Rangers provided a wonderful birthday cake decorated with mushrooms. and the customary owl. Saturday was a beautiful day and everyone voted a birthday party in the bush as being well worth while. St. John’t Company. Prior to the company meeting last Fri day, a presentation was made to Miss I. Checketts who had been for six years Lieutenant of this company. Mesdames J. S. Nelson and R. S. Mclnnes (District Commissioner), Miss Cumming (District Captain) and Rev. J. A. Lush were present, and each spoke appreciatively of the work of Miss Checketts for St. Johns’ Company and the Guide Movement in Southland. Each offered good wishes for the future and the hope that she would return actively to Guiding some day. The presentation made by the leaders was a supper cloth with four napkins to match. In three comers were worked the emblem of each patrol and in the fourth the Guide trefoil, and all round the border were embroidered the names of the company. It is a beautiful piece of work and made entirely by present guides of the company. A lovely bouquet was also given to Miss Checketts, who, in thanking the company, said how much she loved the gift and the thoughts for her that went into the working of it. Guiders’ Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of Guiders will be held next Thursday. Uniforms will not be worn. Southland Executive. The next meeting of the executive is on Friday, April 1, at 1.45 p.m. Central Company. This company now holds its meetings in St. Paul’s schoolroom and has altered its name. It will in future be known as St. Paul’s Compan” of Girl Guides. It is not a verv big company at present and would welcome recruits especially from Gladstone or Waikiwi. To be Remembered. Sports’ Rally on Saturday, April 2, at Showgrounds or Drill Hall if wet. Can! evening at Women’s Club on Monday, April 4. First Class Test. The written first class test will be taken on Saturday, April 18. Will all captains who have guides wishing to sit for this test please send in their entries as for proficiency badge tests, to Mrs Mitchel, 189 Leet street, before April 11. This applies to country guides too, including those who may have already sat for the paper and have certain questions to complete. The Sports Rally. For the Ranger , team events —Overhead

Ball and Quick-Throw Ball—teams will consist of six Rangers, not eight as for Guides. Guides are reminded that they bring all their own gear (except for ambulance race); and this includes a sugar sack and one medium-sized potato for each competitor in the potato race. Guide Chalet “Guides and Guiders throughout the world will be thrilled,” says the Monthly News Sheet, “to hear of the generous gift to them from an American, Mrs J. J. Storrow, of Lincoln, Massachusetts, of a beautiful chalet in Switzerland. Mrs Storrow has also guaranteed the upkeep of this fine place for three years. The chalet is to be called .“Our Chalet,’ and is situated at Eggetli, Adelboden, Switzerland. The altitude, 4,000 ft, makes it a suitable starting place for high mountain climbing and for winter sports. It will be a marvellous place for a holiday, with sleeping accommodation varying in price from 5d a night. There will be at least two general trainings at the chalet each year, and all outposts will be well advised of these beforehand.” There is immense interest taken in this news, and the dominion headquarters in New Zealand has already forwarded six handsome New Zealand rugs as a contribution from the executive. It is felt that the possession of this chalet will be an incentive to all travelling Guides to “polish up” their French and German to get the most out of their visit to beautiful Switzerland Sincere thanks was expressed to Mrs Storrow. Mention is made in the “Sheet” that Wellington owns a Brownie Hut, Southland a camp site at Oreti Beach, with a hut and water laid on, and Marlborough a Guide Home, “Topuni,” which is the centre of all Guide activity and work. It is felt that

New Zealand Guides are among the very fortunate ones in having so much kindness ! shown- them and encouragement in their ; good work. Central Rangers. There will be no meeting on Easter Monday, and the following Monday evening will be uniform night. > Five members of this company were to ' have gone to the Easter camp at Nokomai, but word has been fecived of floods, mak- ■ ing the camp practically impossible now. 1 Swimming Badge. , The remaining events for the Swimming Badge will be taken on Tuesday, April 4, at the baths at 7 pan. St Peter's Company. A pleasant function took place at the usual meeting of St. Peter's Girl Guides on Thursday last when Lieutenant on behalf of the company presented Guide Rita Hardy with a sandwich set in view of her approaching marriage. Lieutenant, in making the presentation, said they were sorry to lose such a keen Guide but wished her joy and happiness in her future life. Guide Hardy suitably replied.
