ANNUAL SWIMMING SPORTS. SOME KEEN COMPETITION. The third annual swimming sports conducted by the Southland Girl Guides at the Municipal Baths last evening resulted in some keen competition, in spite of poor entries. The events were put through in good time, Mr Fitzsimmons and guide officers acting as officials. The senior cup was won by Jennie Thomson (High School B), while Elane Clark (St. Pauls) won the junior cup. At the conclusion of the events, the elementary principles of swimming were explained by Mr Fitzsimmons and demonstrated by Miss Murdoch, much interest ’being manifested in this and also in the display given during the evening by little Audrey Fitzsimmons, who at the age of six, shows considerable promise in swim ming and diving. The following are the results: — SENIOR 100 YARDS FREE STYLE (3 entries). —Faye Hinchey (High School A) and Jennie Thomson (High School B) dead heat 1. This was an exciting race between the winners, resulting in a dead heat, while the third entrant withdrew before -completing the length. Time, Imin. 55sec. SENIOR 33 1-3 YARDS BACKSTROKE (3 entries). —Jennie Thomson (High School B) 1, Betty Wilson (Central Rangers) 2, Faye Hinchey (High School A) 3. Jennie Thomson won easily after leading all the way, two yards separating the second and third placed swimmers. Time, 36sec. SENIOR 50 YARDS BREASTSTROKE (3 entries). —Jennie Thomson (High School B) 1, Lydia B-ell (Central ' Rangers) 2. Jennie Thomson drew out to lead all the way. The third swimmer failed to complete the distance. Time, 62 l-ssec. SENIOR 50 YARDS (3 entries)—Faye Hinchey (High School A) 1, Betty Wilson (Central Rangers) 2, Jennie Thomson (High School B) 3. JUNIOR 25 YARDS BACKSTROKE (5 entries). —Elane Clark (St. Pauls) 1, Monica Ford (St. Johns) 2, Pattie Ford (St. Johns) 3. This race resulted in a close finish after the winner had led all the way. Time, 27sec. JUNIOR 33 1-3 YARDS BREASTSTROKE (4 entries).—Elane Clark (St. Pauls) 1, Zoe Smith (High School) 2, Monica Ford (St. Johns) 3. Elane Clark won easily. Time, 37sec. JUNIOR 33 1-3 YARDS FREE STROKE (5 entries). —Elane Clark (St. Pauls) 1, Monica Ford (St. Johns) 2, Pattie Ford (St. Johns) 3. Elane Clark drew out to win comfortably, while Monica Ford took second place, beating the third swimmer easily. Time, 28 4-ssec. JUNIOR 50 YARDS (6 entries).—Elane Clark (St. Pauls) 1, Pattie Ford (St. Johns) 2, Zoe Smith (High School A) 3. An exciting race between the second and third placed swimmers, while the main issue was never in doubt. Time, 46sec. JUNIOR DIVE (3 entries).—Elane Clark 1, Zoe Smith 2.
