THE NEW GUARD
LEADER’S CHARGE DENIED. (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Sydney, March 16. Both the Commissioner of Police, Mr Childs, and the Police Officers’ Association have replied to Colonel Eric Campbell’s statement, denying his remarks. In a speech at Manly which was broadcast, Colonel Eric Campbell, leader of the New Guard, denied Police Commissioner Childs’ statement in his recent report to the Government and reiterated his allegations against the Police Department. “It makes me boil with indignation when I think that, a gentleman in Mr Childs’ position has to have recourse to such allegations to try to get away from straightout facts,” he said. “My statement that a sergeant of police was promoted for his activities in connection with the Lane Cove case has been denied." Colonel Campbell then told how a Sergeant Clark had called at the New Guard headquarters and showed Colonel Campbell a crown on his arm, saying: “It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.” And pointing to the crown he had added: “I got that out of your prosecution.” , PROTECTION NOT SOUGHT. Canberra, March 16. Mr J. A. Lyon, in answer to questions in the House of Representatives, denied that he sought protection from the New Guard during the election campaign and that he had promised to introduce legislation to provide for the deportation of Communists.
