BLUFF NOTES

CRICKET BAZAAR. (From Our Correspondent.) As anticipated, the bazaar and concert in aid of the Bluff Cricket Club’s funds was well patronized by the public, the Town Hall holding a large crowd on each of the two-night season. In opening the bazaar, his Worship the Mayor, Mr T. F. Doyle, said he was delighted to see so many present. The Cricket Club had been under considerable expense during the season, but it had effected improvements to the playing area which reflected great credit on those responsible. When it was remembered that £l5 had been spent on cutting the grass, and that a shelter fence and seats had been placed along a section of the southern boundary it would be realized that funds were urgently needed. New equipment had also meant further expense. The speaker paid a tribute to the club’s energetic secretary, Mr D. Parry, and to those members who had given him such wholehearted support. A special word of praise was due to Mrs T. Stewart for arranging the concert programme and giving much time to rehearsals. The performers had sacrificed a lot, of their time in the same good work and were also deserving of otWfit. The cricket club was deserving of support, the speaker said in conclusion, and he trusted the present effort would prove as successful as it promised to be. A most attractive display was made by the stalls and excellent business was done each night. The stallholders were: Produce, Mesdames J. Forde and J. Tait; flower, Mrs D. Andrews and Mr W. Walker; jelly, Mesdames Baird, J. Thompson and R. Hutchinson; sweets, Mrs F. W. McDonald and the Misses N. Parry and I. Wiig; cake and cafeteria, Mesdames R. Fowler, W. Miller, W. Barber, E. McKenzie and C. Winter; jumble, Mrs B-. Johnson and Miss Gwen Johnson. The entertainment part took the form of a revue and the well-rehearsed show went with a swing from start to finish on each occasion, the audience showing approval by generous applause. A feature of the entertainment was the attractive music provided by the orchestra, the members of which were: Mrs T. Stewart (piano), the Misses L, Hunter and I. Hutton and Mr E. Bigwood (violins), Messrs W. Pickard (saxophone), T. Stalker (piccolo) and R. Ashwell (cornet). Some very clever dancing was done by several members of the company while the lighting effects in various scenes was exceedingly artistic. Ballets. chorus and scenas followed each other without pause and the principals were ably supported by the remainder of the company. In addition to the former numbers items were given as follows: Musical monologue, Mrs W. Robertson; solo dances, Miss M. Fowler; Spanish dances, Miss M. Fowler and Miss R. Walker; vocal duet, Miss V. Brown and Mr F. W. McDonald; tongs, Miss E. Metzger, Messrs A. Grant, J. Bradshaw and J. Gavigan. At the conclusion of the entertainment the performers received an ovation from the audience and the opinion was freely expressed that the revue was well up to the standard of the concerts for wliich Bluff artists vere noted in the past. Social Evening.

The social and dance given by the Bluff Public School Committee in the Town Hall on Thursday night in honour of the visit of H.M.S. Laburnum was a very happy function. Among the large number present from the war sloop were Commander R. Ramsbotham and Lieut.-Commander Johnston, while the Mayor and Mayoress of Bluff (Mr and Mrs T. F. Doyle) and t|ie chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board (Mr VV. B. Dixon) and Mrs Dixon, with representatives of local bodies,- were among the Bluff patrons. The visitors were welcomed by the Mayor, who expressed the pleasure of the community at having them present and assured the guests that local people were always pleased to welcome men of His Majesty’s Navy. His Worship concluded by inviting all to make themselves at home and wishing them a happy stay in port. During the evening several songs were rendered by Mr Freeman and humorous items by Mr Seaton, both of the Laburnum personnel, and their contributions were highly appreciated by the audience. On behalf of the School Committee, Mr A. J. Brown, who made a highly efficient M.C., thanked the performers for materially assisting in making the function so enjoyable. Music was provided by the local Miiyon-Airs Orchestra. It can truthfully be said that the function was enjoyed by all and was a success in every way.
