FIRE BRIGADES
DEMONSTRATION AT GORE. AN INTERESTING EVENT. The Otago and Southland Fire Brigades competitions to be held in Gore on Plaster Saturday are attracting considerable attention and an interesting display of the equipment to be used together with photos of previous winning teams is being made in the N.Z. Clothing Factory Company’s window, Main street, Gore, by courtesy of the manager, Mr Jamieson. For the benefit of those who are not acquainted with the interesting nature of these competitions, the following details of the conditions attaching to hose, reel and ladder event for the Hill-side-Tapley Cup should prove instructive: Five men to run 10 yards pick up reel run 40 yards with reel to plug, ship standpipe, run out and connect ■ a 100 ft length of hoso. break coupling, fix branch, and strike disc with water; disconnect branch, run out and connect a 50ft length of hose, break coupling, fix branch, raise and extend ladder, take lead on to platform, and strike disc with- water. Extension ladder to be lying with heel 6ft from front of platform. Reel to pass mark 135 ft from standpipe before last coupling is broken. Reel to carry 200 ft wet hose, one standpipe and
one branch. Time taken when disc in the platform is broken. Each of the teams runs separately and the trophy goes to the one recording the fastest time. Each event is subject to strict conditions and unless equipment is correct in every detail a penalty of so many seconds, according to the seriousness of the offence, is imposed.
