“WASTING TIME”

PLEA FOR MORE ACTION. MEMBERS DISGRUNTLED. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, March 9. Further pleas for economy of time in the economy Session were made in the House of Representatives this afternoon by speakers in the Address-in-Reply debate. "I wonder why the Government did not cut out the Address-in-Reply debate?” Mr E. J. Howard (L, Christchurch South) asked. “Why didn’t it cut-out the debate and say to his Excellency ‘Thank you.’ Let that be the end of it. We do not need the Address-in-Reply debate in the economy session. However, we all know the reason for it. Die Government is not ready with its legislation.” Another advocate of less time being wasted in Parliament was Mr H. M. Campbell (Govt., Hawkes Bay), the next speaker. He advocated a smaller Parliament on the grounds of smoother running, less waste time and smaller expenditure. He claimed that the constituents would be just as well served. “What have we done in the past three weeks?” he asked. “We have passed one small measure, the Closure, and that was to pave the way for the passing of legislation. I don’t see why the Government should not have its legislation ready before the session begins and let us get on with it instead of hanging about here for weeks and weeks ami incurring expenditure. The country can ill afford it.”
