A. Wright, T. Sim, W. Gee, A. T. Pettigrew, A. McLachlan and G. C. Hamilton. Correspondence. A letter from the Unemployment Board stated that it had received advice from the State Forest Board that a considerable surplus of tree stocks might be available after the winter planting programme of the department had been provided for and that supplies from such surplus would be made available to local bodies as the Unemployment Board directed. The trees were offered to local bodies on payment of lifting, packing and freight charges only. The Unemployment Board was desirous that where possible local bodies having suitable areas should'avail themselves of this offer and organize a programme for the utilization of unemployed labour in preparing the ground and planting the trees. The letter was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
The secretary of the Southland League advised that the league had been requested by the Queenstown Borough Council to convene a meeting of representatives of interested local bodies in order to discuss the question of the Kingston-Queenstown road. The matter had been discussed at a meeting of the league and it had decided to call a conference of local body representatives to be held at Invercargill on March 12. The Mayor and Councillor Baldey were appointed to represent the council. Mr Hay applied for a crossing into a section in Main'Street north. —Granted. Works Committee.
In connection with the health inspector’s report in respect of drainage in Mersey street, the Works Committee reported that after discussing the matter with Messrs Fleming and Howard, it was provisionally agreed that t.ho inspector's suggestion be carried out either to Gorton street corner or to Ashton street. Tire committee recommended that the council do the labour required and that Messrs Fleming and Howard pay for the materials.
The committee recommended that in connection with drainage work at the cemetery, the drain between the old and new portions, which was already dug to a depth of two feet for tiles, be put down to a depth of six feet; also that the engineer’s plans approved by the previous council be modified. The committee further recommended that a further supply of gravel be put down on the clay portion of the road before the winter set in.
In connection with the new footpath in Broughton street, the committee recommended that the newly formed footpath be
left as at present and allowed to settle down before gravel was put on. As regards the recommendation in reference to drainage work at the cemetery, it was decided to ascertain the cost of drainploughing the new portion. The other recommendations of the committee were adopted.
