NORTHERN FLOODS
WATERS RECEDING GENERAL IMPROVEMENT REPORTED RAILWAYS SUFFER DAMAGE (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, February 22. The weather is now clearing and the floods are subsiding. A heavy range in the Lyttelton Harbour during the night damaged 100 yards of the railway track on the Gladstone Pier. The latest advice received by the local office of the Railway Department is that the Pareora bridge will be repaired sufficiently to carry traffic by Wednesday or Thursday. Scarcely any railway passengers from Dunedin have arrived in Christchurch since Friday. Many who began the journey on Saturday are expected this evening. RAILWAY SERVICE INTERRUPTION ON MAIN ROUTE. Dunedin, February 22. The Railway’s Traffic Department anticipates that the break on the Main North line between Otaio and Pareora will not be completely restored till Friday. Meantime the gap has been bridged for motors. The expresses either way are expected to be running about one and a-half hours late between Christchurch and Dunedin. Road Report. The secretary of the Southland Motor Association (Mr J. S. Dick) has been advised by the Otago Motor Association that the roads are clear through Otago Central and to the north of Dunedin except at the Kilmog, where it is necessary to deviate via Seacliff and Karitane. LOCAL MAILS. Tho Post- Office advise that owing to the floods, the mail from the north which usually reaches Invercargill by the mail train on Monday will not reach Invercargill this morning until after the arrival of the 9.35 train. The Post Office propose sending this mail by motor van to Clinton to connect with the train which leaves for Invercargill at 5.50 a.m.
