Over a long period of years, one of the main exports from Timaru has been frozen meat, and it is interesting to study the figures from as far back as 1888 (says the Herald). In that year the total number of carcasses exported' was 33,032. In the following year the total dropped to 11,509, but after that there was a gradual improvement until in 1891 the figures reached 156,457 carcasses. Four years later a fresh record was set, the year’s shipment reaching 176,302 carcasses. By 1903 the total export had gone up to 657,604 carcasses, and in 1910 it reached 804,100 carcasses. The record for the port was established in 1920, in which year 1,287,147 carcasses were shipped overseas, and that figure has not since been exceeded. The export for the 12 months ended September 30 last was 908,108 carcasses. The latest additions to the museum of old figureheads at the naval dockyard, Calliope Dock, Auckland, are the figures that formerly graced the bows of the wrecked barque India and the ship William Manson.

An exceptionally large number of passengers landed from the Aorangi when the liner arrived at Auckland last week - from Sydney. Her passengers totalled 282, the largest number that has been carried across the Tasman on a single vessel since Christmas, 1930, and of that number 220 landed at Auckland. The arrivals included a large percentage of business men from overseas anxious to investigate New Zealand conditions with a view to extension of trade.
