BOWLS

DOMINION TOURNEY RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP SIX ROUNDS PLAYED (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, January 18. Up to to-day the weather had been perfect for the bowling tournament, but early in the morning the indications were that no play would be possible. From 9 o’clock onwards, however, the conditions improved and a light sou’-wester did not affect play. During the early part of the afternoon bowlers on all greens donned overcoats or held umbrellas over their heads while awaiting their turns on the mat. Had the rain fallen a month ago it would have been very beneficial to the greens, but its arrival during the most important stage of the tournament is decidedly inopportune. There were many surprising reversals of form during the day owing to the changed conditions of the various greens. Hampton’s Sumner rink when the two met on the Linwood green in the third round on Saturday morning, says the Christchurch Times. Hampton, who had retired from the tournament temporarily, was expected to skip again yesterday. In the meantime J. S. Martin is skip and F. C. Cother has been included as substitute. Rennie was two down on the twenty-fourth head, which was burnt. In the replay Rennie drew level by scoring two. The twenty-fifth head was burnt and on the twenty-sixth Rennie, after building up a good head, trailed the jack beautifully for two. In the fourth round Hampton won, but Rennie lost to J. Hutchison (Dunedin), who has not suffered a defeat so far. J. Findlay’s Mount Eden rink, after winning both rounds on' Friday, collapsed against E. Bandy (Papanui). The Aucklanders, who include Nairn, Turner and Colthurst, lost by fifteen. Dr Sandston (Christchurch) and W. D. Ramsay (Shirley), with whom Findaly had been on equal terms at. the end of play on Friday, both won their games on Saturday morning and led the section. In the fourth round, however, Findlay defeated Sandston, but Ramsay won his game, giving the last-named the section leadership with four victories. Skoglund’s Rink Defeated. With the defeat of the Skoglund family rink by C. H. Piper’s Christchurch team

in Ihe morning, W. Bremner (West End, Auckland) leads in his section -with no losses. Bremner, however, had a very close call, winning by one from G. G. Adess (St. Kilda). In the fourth round he accounted for J. D. Renton (St. Albans) by eight. G. A. Deare (Dunedin) continued his run of successes by defeating G. E. Piper (Maitai) by twelve on the Edgeware green. W. Raphael (Canterbury), who was narrowly defeated by Deare on Friday, finished twenty-two up against W. Brown (Christchurch), whom A. Armstrong (Roslyn) defeated in the fourth round and thereby drew on to level terms with Deare and Raphael. Each has three wins, and Armstrong has yet to meet Deare. Of the three leaders in section B at the conclusion of play on Friday, J. Dick (Ashburton) was the only skip to win on Saturday morning, and led the section at the end of the third round. Dick met J. N. Du Feu, who had been level with him in wins, and defeated the St. Albans skip by three. E. Wilson (St. Kilda), who won both games on Friday, lost by three to W. G. Ives’s Canterbury rink. Dick, however, lost his solo lead by going down before E. Wilson (St. Kilda) in the fourth round, and now six rinks are equal in points. Gordon (Canterbury) D-oing Well. L. A.
