GENERAL TARIFF
BRITAIN’S FISCAL POLICY. DECISION LIKELY THIS WEEK. (United Frees Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, January 17. Several Sunday papers hint that Cabinet, including the former free traders, will reach a decision during the coming week to impose an immediate low general import tariff, probably of 10 per cent., with the object of redressing the trade balance. Lord Arnold, denying the Labourites had ever favoured the wheat quota, denounced the proposal ns one of the craziest ever produced, and said it would increase the cost of the loaf. POLICY AWAITED FREE STATE’S ATTITUDE. London, January 17. The Irish Times says President Cosgrave will not decide the date of dissolution of the Dail Eireann till Mr Walter Runciman has announced the British economic policy in the House of Commons. The latter will be most important to all the dominions and will have a considerable bearing on the Irish election. An Imperial Economic Conference in order to expedite matters will probably be held in London during May or June instead of at Ottawa in July.
